What home care in East Sussex involves and what to look for
How a package tends to grow
Home care means support delivered where somebody already lives, arranged around the parts of the day that have become difficult. Most arrangements start with a single morning call to help with washing, dressing and medication, then expand as circumstances change. Longer visits, evening calls to help someone to bed, overnight cover, live in support and companionship time that gives a family carer a real break are all commonly available. Because East Sussex spreads from busy seafront towns to villages well inland, the first question to settle with any agency is whether its carers genuinely travel to the address.
Making use of the CQC record
All one hundred and five agencies listed here are registered with the Care Quality Commission, and the ratings across East Sussex include Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement together with agencies that are not yet rated. The rating narrows the field, but the report is what informs a decision. It records whether calls arrived when promised, how medicines were administered and documented, what training carers received before being sent out and how the registered manager responded when concerns were raised. Check the inspection date as well, because services change. An unrated agency has not been inspected rather than been found wanting, so ask how long it has traded and who registered it.
Questions to put to every agency
Ask how many different carers will attend over a fortnight and whether a small consistent team is kept for each person. Find out how you would be told when a visit is running late, who answers the telephone at weekends, and how complaints are recorded and resolved. Ask to see a blank care plan and check how quickly it can be rewritten after a hospital stay. Providers appearing here, such as Curant Care and Care To You Healthcare, will answer these differently, which is exactly why the same questions should go to all of them.
Getting an assessment and sorting out funding in East Sussex
The care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support can request a free care needs assessment, whatever their income or savings. A practitioner from East Sussex County Council will discuss washing, dressing, eating, taking medication, moving safely indoors and staying in contact with other people, then record which needs are eligible for support. Anyone providing regular unpaid help has a separate right to a carer's assessment, so ask for both together. The written record is valuable even where a family fully intends to pay privately.
Who pays for what
Where needs are eligible, a financial assessment considers income and capital. Care may then be funded in full, funded in part with a contribution from the person receiving it, or paid for privately. Families who qualify can request a direct payment and commission an agency of their own choosing rather than accept one arranged for them. Privately funded home care is normally charged by the hour, with higher rates at weekends, on bank holidays and for shorter calls, while live in support is quoted weekly. Ask each agency to confirm rates, travel charges, minimum visit length and notice period in writing before you commit.
