The point of the help is to make somebody's own life workable, not to take it over. We support older people with washing and dressing, getting up and settling at night, medication, meals, shopping and housework, and with getting out to appointments or into company. We work with people living with dementia, keeping routines and carers consistent because that is what genuinely helps. We support people with a physical disability, fitting around the equipment and routines that already suit them, and younger adults who want practical help to live independently. Before we start we ask what a person can already do and wants to keep doing, and we build around that. Support that quietly removes somebody's independence is easy to give and hard to undo. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission. Instead of pointing you at a badge, we would rather you tested us with questions about how we recruit, train and supervise our carers, how long our calls are, what happens when one runs late and who answers the telephone at the weekend.
