Choosing between the care homes in the East Midlands
Narrow the list before you start visiting
A listing of one thousand and thirty two homes is not something to work through in order, and the useful first step is deciding what would rule a home out. Distance from the people who will visit most often matters more than families expect, because a home an hour away is visited less than one down the road, however good it looked on the day. Beyond that, be clear about whether personal care is genuinely enough, or whether nursing on site will be needed before long. Homes on this page are registered as residential care homes, so a resident whose clinical needs grow may eventually have to move again.
Ratings are a starting point, not a verdict
The homes here hold ratings of Outstanding and Good as well as Requires Improvement, and some carry no rating because they registered too recently to have been inspected. A rating condenses one inspection on one set of days into a single word, so read what sits underneath it. Look at which key questions were marked down, whether the concerns were about clinical safety, record keeping or the way people were spoken to, and how long ago the visit took place. A home that has since changed manager may be a different place from the one described, and any manager worth trusting will tell you plainly what has changed and what has not.
What a visit reveals that paperwork cannot
Go at an awkward time, such as mid afternoon or during a meal, and stay longer than feels comfortable. Watch how staff speak to residents who cannot easily answer back, and whether people are dressed, occupied and out of their rooms. Ask how many staff are on duty overnight, what turnover has been over the past year, and how sickness is covered. Ask what would happen if your relative's needs increased, and whether that would mean moving elsewhere.
Arranging and paying for residential care in the East Midlands
Begin with a care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support can ask for an assessment whatever their income or savings, and a relative can make that request on their behalf. A practitioner from the local authority will look at mobility, memory, medication, continence, nutrition and safety, then set out whether needs can still be met at home or whether a residential placement has become the realistic answer. The written outcome is worth having even when you expect to pay privately, because it tells a prospective home exactly what it would be taking on. Where the question arises during a hospital stay, the discharge team usually starts the process before anyone leaves the ward.
How the fees work
Weekly fees cover accommodation, meals and personal care, while extras such as hairdressing, chiropody, newspapers and outings are normally billed on top. A financial assessment applies the national means test, so capital above the upper threshold means funding the placement privately, at least until it falls towards the lower limit. A property may be disregarded where a spouse or certain other relatives still live in it, and a deferred payment agreement can sometimes cover the gap while a house is being sold. If the reason for the move is largely clinical, ask whether NHS continuing healthcare has been considered, since that changes the picture entirely. Ask every home for a written fee schedule showing what is included and what is charged separately.
