What Types of Care Can I Search For?
Residential care homes
Residential care homes provide 24-hour support with personal care such as washing, dressing, and medication, but do not have registered nurses on site. They are well suited to older people who need regular help with daily tasks but whose medical needs can be managed by visiting community nurses or GPs.
Nursing homes
Nursing homes have registered nurses on duty around the clock and are the right choice when someone has complex health needs, requires regular clinical interventions, or has been assessed as needing nursing care by their GP or hospital team. If the NHS agrees that nursing care is required, it will contribute the Funded Nursing Care rate of £235.88 per week directly to the home.
Home care agencies
Home care allows someone to remain in their own home while receiving visits from a trained carer. Care can range from a single 30-minute visit each day to live-in care where a carer is present around the clock. Home care is often preferred when someone values their independence, has strong local ties, or when moving into a care home is not yet necessary.
How to Get the Most From Your Search
The more detail you provide in your answers, the better your matches will be. Be specific about the care needs involved, for example dementia, Parkinson's, or end-of-life care, as these are specialist areas not every home covers. Selecting a realistic budget range helps us filter out homes that are unlikely to be affordable, and noting any strong preferences such as CQC rating or proximity to family will narrow the results further.
Once you receive your shortlist, we recommend calling two or three homes directly to arrange visits before making any decisions. Our Funding Calculator can help you understand what the council may contribute before those conversations begin.
