Nursing homes provide round the clock care from registered nurses alongside personal support with daily living. They suit people whose health needs cannot safely be met at home or in a residential setting, including those with complex long term conditions, advanced frailty, palliative needs, or rehabilitation requirements after hospital. Across South East there are 943 nursing homes listed on Care Assura, ranging from small family run houses to larger specialist units, so families usually have a genuine choice within a reasonable travelling distance.
Understanding CQC ratings across South East
The 943 nursing homes in the South East hold a mix of Care Quality Commission judgements. Some are rated Outstanding, such as Kingfishers, St David's Nursing Home and Melrose Care Home. A large share sit at Good, including Windsor Care Centre, Byron Lodge Care Home, Saltwood Care Centre and Wantage Nursing Home. Others are currently Requires Improvement, for example Cherington, Puttenham Hill House Care Home and Dashwood Manor, and one in the sample, St Anselm's Nursing Home, is rated Inadequate. Practical things to check on a visit
Look at staffing patterns, particularly the ratio of registered nurses on shift at night, and ask how clinical needs such as wound care, PEG feeding, diabetes management or end of life care are handled. Notice the small things: whether residents look comfortable, whether call bells are answered promptly, and how staff speak to people living with dementia. Ask about GP visits, pharmacy arrangements, activities, and how families are kept informed when a resident's condition changes.
Getting an assessment and sorting out funding
Before a nursing home place is confirmed, most people go through a care needs assessment. This is a structured conversation about health, mobility, continence, cognition and social wellbeing, and it produces a written summary of the support required. You can request one through the local authority adult social care team, which is responsible for coordinating assessments and any funded care in the South East.
Financial assessment and NHS Continuing Healthcare
Once needs are agreed, a separate financial assessment decides whether the local authority contributes to fees. In England, people with capital above the upper threshold usually pay their own fees, while those below it may receive means tested support. Because nursing homes involve registered nursing input, residents are also assessed for the NHS Funded Nursing Care contribution, which is paid directly to the home. Some people with intense, complex or unpredictable health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which covers the full cost of the placement.
Typical cost context in the South East

Weekly fees are generally higher than for residential only care because of the nursing element.
