Can Medway Council fund a care home placement?

It can, where both a care needs assessment and a financial assessment support it. The needs assessment must establish that residential care is the appropriate form of support, and the financial assessment then examines capital, income and usually the value of a property. Where capital falls below the national upper threshold, Medway Council contributes towards the fees through a personal budget. Planning and Paying for Residential Care in Medway

The money side of a care home move is not difficult, but it is unfamiliar, and unfamiliar things get postponed until a decision is already being forced by a discharge date. Both assessments below are free, and starting them early is what keeps the choice of home genuinely open.

The care needs assessment

This assessment establishes what support a person requires and whether residential care is the right answer at all. It is not means tested, and anyone who appears to need care may request one, as may a relative on their behalf. Fees differ between homes according to the room, the staffing and the complexity of care provided. Ask for a written schedule with the extras itemised, the review date named and last year's increase stated. Ask what would happen if savings fell to the threshold partway through a stay, and whether a third party contribution would then be expected to keep the same room.

Taking the ratings seriously

Looking beyond the rating

A strong rating does not guarantee a person will settle, and the practical questions still matter. Smaller homes tend to be quieter and more domestic; larger ones usually offer more activity and better equipment. Ask what an ordinary day looks like, how residents get outdoors, whether visitors are welcome at any hour, and how someone who prefers their own company is supported.

On the visit itself

Go twice, with one visit unannounced and near a mealtime. Watch whether staff speak to residents in passing rather than only while completing tasks, whether anyone is hurried through eating, and how long call bells ring. Ask how many carers are on duty overnight and how much agency cover is used, since thin staffing usually sits behind a poor inspection. Ask to see a room that is genuinely available rather than the one kept for viewings.
