Choosing Among the Care Homes in Brighton and Hove
The fifty nine care homes listed here differ from one another far more than a directory entry can convey. Some are ordinary houses on residential streets supporting a small group of people, others are purpose built settings with dozens of rooms. Working through them methodically, rather than starting with whichever name sounds most familiar, gives you a much better chance of finding somewhere that genuinely suits your relative.
Be Clear About the Level of Support Needed
Every provider on this page is registered as a residential care home, which means personal care rather than nursing care: help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and the ordinary shape of the day, along with company and supervision around the clock. Before you compare anywhere, write down what your relative needs now and what they may plausibly need in a year or two. Mobility, memory, continence and how much prompting someone needs at night are the details that decide whether a placement lasts. Put those needs to each home directly and ask them to say plainly whether they can meet them.
Reading the Inspection Picture Properly
Across these fifty nine providers, three currently hold an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission, forty six are rated Good, eight are at Requires Improvement and two have not yet been rated. Portland Road, Sackville Gardens and Fairdene Lodge are the homes carrying the Outstanding judgement. A rating summarises one inspection on one set of days, so open the report itself and read the findings behind the headline, particularly on safety and on how the home is led. A Requires Improvement rating deserves a question rather than an automatic exclusion, since what matters is whether the specific concerns have since been addressed and how openly the manager will discuss them.
What Only a Visit Will Tell You
Visit at least twice, and try to arrange one of those visits around a mealtime, when the atmosphere of a home is hardest to stage. Notice whether staff speak to residents by name and in passing, not only when delivering a task, and whether people who cannot easily ask for something still seem attended to. Ask how many permanent staff work each shift and how heavily the home relies on agency cover, because continuity matters more to most residents than decor. If you can, speak to a relative of someone already living there.
Arranging and Paying for Residential Care in Brighton and Hove
Starting With a Care Needs Assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to a free assessment of their needs, whatever their savings, and it is the sensible first step even for families expecting to pay privately. You can request one from Brighton and Hove City Council Adult Social Care, the authority responsible for assessments and funded support in this area. A social care practitioner will look at how someone manages everyday tasks, what risks they face and what outcomes matter to them, and the resulting record is useful evidence when you approach individual homes.
The Financial Assessment
Where the assessment finds that residential care is the right answer, a separate financial assessment follows to work out what the person contributes and whether the council contributes anything. Capital, income and, in some circumstances, the value of a property are taken into account, with rules that treat a spouse remaining at home differently. If you are likely to fund the placement yourselves, it is still worth asking the council for information about arranging care and about the position should savings later fall.
Understanding What a Placement Costs
Fees vary considerably between the homes on this page, driven by room size, location, whether a room has its own bathroom and how much support someone requires. Always ask for a written schedule of fees and a copy of the contract before agreeing anything, and check what sits outside the weekly rate, such as hairdressing, chiropody and outings. Where a council funded placement costs more than the authority will pay, a third party top up may be requested, and you should understand exactly who would be committing to that and for how long.
