About St Mary’s House
St Mary's House is a residential care home in Brighton for older people, including residents with a physical disability and people living with sight or hearing loss. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing the people who live here as individuals. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and whatever else has become difficult to manage, and we try to leave people in charge of everything else. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or their own quiet room. Where somebody has a physical disability the right equipment is in place and our staff are trained to help with moving safely and comfortably. For residents with sight or hearing loss we adapt how we communicate, say who we are as we come into a room and take care not to move things without mentioning it. Those small habits make the difference between a person feeling at home and feeling managed. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Being in Brighton means visitors, the sea air and somewhere to go for a change of scene. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Please ring us if you would like to look round.
