About 290 Dyke Road
We are a residential care home on Dyke Road in Brighton, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and people with physical disabilities. Most of those living here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. Our starting point is that this is where people live, not where they have been placed. People arrange their own rooms, have a real say in the food and the shopping, and are involved in how the household runs. Where somebody can do a thing themselves, our job is to make that possible rather than to do it faster on their behalf, even when the quicker route is tempting on a busy morning. Being in Brighton has practical advantages we try to use. Shops, buses, colleges, work and places to meet people are all close, and supporting somebody to use them on their own terms is usually worth more than anything we could arrange indoors. We are careful about routine and about explaining change in good time. For many of those living here, knowing what is happening and who will be on shift is what makes a day workable rather than difficult. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change about the place, and we act on what we are told.
