How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?

Contact the adult social care team at Essex County Council and ask for a care needs assessment. Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to one regardless of income or savings, and you can make the request on a relative's behalf. A practitioner will look at daily tasks, mobility, medication and safety, then set out what support would meet the need. A financial assessment is carried out separately to establish who pays for what.

Will Essex County Council contribute towards home care?

It depends on the outcome of the needs assessment and the financial assessment taken together. Essex County Council applies the national means test, so capital above the upper threshold means funding care privately, while capital below it can bring a contribution towards the cost. Where care is funded, a direct payment is often available so that you can choose the agency yourself rather than accept an arranged service. Where someone needs supervision around the clock, a residential setting is usually the more realistic option.

How early should a family start looking for an agency in Essex?

A few weeks is usually enough to compare agencies, arrange an assessment and let a package start gently rather than at full strength.
