What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides personal care, meaning support with washing, dressing, medication, meals, and the ordinary shape of the day. A nursing home delivers that alongside qualified nursing staff on site, which is what makes the difference where there are wounds to manage, feeding tubes, or a condition that can change quickly. The homes listed on this page are registered to provide residential care. If nursing cover turns out to be necessary, the care needs assessment should say so, and establishing that early avoids wasted visits.

What should we ask when visiting a care home in Essex?

Ask how staffing levels alter overnight and at weekends, and how long the carers on duty have worked in the home. Ask which GP practice covers residents, what happens when someone becomes unwell, and how soon the family is told. A second unannounced visit at a different time of day is often more revealing than the first appointment.
