Care Homes in Kent
This page lets you weigh the care homes in Kent against one another on the same terms, rather than forming an impression of one home at a time and trying to recall it weeks later. Three hundred and sixty providers are listed, each registered as a residential care home offering accommodation together with personal care. Their inspection results occupy every point of the scale, with homes rated Outstanding and Good sitting beside homes rated Requires Improvement or Inadequate, and a further group that has not yet been given a rating at all. Kent County Council is the body responsible for the care needs assessment that establishes what level of support a person needs, and for the financial assessment that decides whether public funds meet part of the weekly fee. Neither assessment obliges anyone to accept what is proposed. Given how widely the ratings differ, open the profile of every home you are considering, read the inspection report underneath the rating, and let what the inspectors set down there guide where you go to visit.
What residential care in Kent involves and what to look for
What these homes are registered to provide
Residential care means a permanent home with meals, company and staff on hand day and night to help with washing, dressing, moving about, continence and medication. It does not mean nursing. The three hundred and sixty providers listed for Kent are registered to deliver personal care rather than clinical care, so a resident who later needs wound management, a catheter or regular clinical observation will usually depend on visiting district nurses or, in time, a move to a home with nursing on site. Thinking that through at the outset spares a second upheaval later, and the care needs assessment is the place where the question gets answered properly.
Ratings fall at every point on the scale
Homes on this page hold ratings of Outstanding and Good as well as Requires Improvement and Inadequate, and some carry no rating because they registered too recently to have been inspected. That spread is the single strongest argument against choosing on location or appearance alone. A rating compresses one inspection, carried out over a particular few days, into one word, so open the report and read what sits under it. Note which key questions were marked down, whether the concern was about safety, record keeping or the way people were spoken to, and how long ago the inspectors called. A home that has changed hands or changed manager since may be a different place, and its current manager should be able to say precisely how.
What a visit tells you that no report can
Go at an awkward hour, such as mid afternoon or in the middle of a meal, and stay longer than feels polite. Watch how staff talk to residents who cannot easily answer back, and whether people are dressed, occupied and out of their rooms rather than lined up facing a television. Ask how many staff are on duty overnight, what turnover has been over the past year, and how sickness gets covered. Ask what would happen if your relative's needs grew, and whether that would mean moving on.
Getting an assessment and sorting out the funding in Kent
Start with the care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support has a right to an assessment whatever their income, and a relative can ask for one on their behalf. Kent County Council carries out that assessment along with the financial assessment that follows it, and arranges funded support for those who qualify. A practitioner will look at mobility, memory, medication, continence, nutrition and safety before setting out whether needs can still be met at home or whether residential care has become the realistic answer. The written outcome earns its keep whoever pays, because it tells a prospective home exactly what it would be taking on and gives you a document to compare homes against. Where the question arises during a hospital stay, the ward discharge team normally sets the process going.
How the weekly fee gets met
Fees cover accommodation, meals and personal care, while hairdressing, chiropody, newspapers and outings are generally charged on top. The financial assessment applies the national means test, so capital above the upper threshold means funding a placement privately until it falls towards the lower limit. A property may be disregarded where a spouse or certain other relatives still live in it, and a deferred payment agreement can cover the gap while a house is being sold. If the move is driven mainly by clinical need, ask whether NHS continuing healthcare has been considered, because that changes the picture completely. Ask every home for a written fee schedule setting out what is included and what is billed separately.
