Getting assessed and working out the cost in Newcastle
Bringing carers into the house is usually the first formal step a family takes, and it tends to follow a familiar sequence. What someone needs is established first, how it will be paid for is settled second, and an agency is chosen once both are reasonably clear.
Requesting a care needs assessment
An assessment is free, and anyone who appears to need care and support can ask for one whatever their savings. A practitioner will go through daily routines, mobility, medication, memory and risk, and will produce a written record of what support is needed and how often. Ask Staffordshire County Council adult social care, the authority responsible for assessments and for arranging funded support in this area. A relative already providing unpaid care has a separate right to a carer assessment, which considers their own needs, including whether they are getting any break at all.
Rates, contributions and the small print
A financial assessment follows and looks at income and savings. For care delivered at home the value of the property someone lives in is disregarded, which is a significant difference from residential care and means more people receive help than expect to. Where support is agreed, it may come as a package the council arranges or as a direct payment that lets the family pick the agency. Agencies set their own hourly rates, usually charge more at evenings, weekends and bank holidays, and often apply a minimum visit length, so ask for the rate card in writing and check whether travel time is billed. It is also worth asking about attendance allowance, which is not means tested and is claimed separately from anything the council does.

What the ratings do and do not tell you
Of the ninety four agencies on this page, four are rated Outstanding and sixty one Good, three sit at Requires Improvement and two have been rated Inadequate, while twenty four have no published rating yet, which normally means they have not been inspected since registering. Ratings are a sound filter but a poor final answer. Read what the report says about staffing, timekeeping and how the agency responds when something goes wrong, and check when the inspection happened, since an agency can improve or slip considerably within a year.
The questions that reveal the difference
Continuity is the thing families come to value most. Ask how many different carers would visit across a fortnight, who covers holidays and sickness, and how late a visit has to run before the office rings to say so. Ask how carers are trained on medication and on moving someone safely, how a care plan is changed when needs shift, and who answers the telephone at nine on a Sunday evening. Ask what happens if the arrangement is not working, including notice periods and how a complaint is handled. An agency that answers those questions plainly and without hesitation is usually the one worth trying first.
