Home Care in Cambridgeshire
By the time a family starts ringing round the home care agencies in Cambridgeshire, the situation has usually changed twice over: first a slow loss of confidence at home, then some incident that made the slow part impossible to ignore any longer. Cambridgeshire County Council is the authority responsible for the care needs assessment that sits behind any funded support, and for deciding what public help follows; the assessment itself is free and open to anyone who appears to need care, whatever their savings. One hundred and thirty six agencies match this search. Outstanding is represented among them, a large share are rated Good, others are recorded as Requires Improvement, and a considerable number have registered too recently to have been inspected and so carry no rating. Since the difference between agencies shows up in punctuality and continuity rather than in glossy descriptions, open the profiles you are weighing and read the inspection reports properly before you agree to anything.
What Home Care in Cambridgeshire Involves and What to Look For
Care at home comes in more shapes than most families realise when they start. A single short call to help someone wash and dress is one thing; four visits a day with medication support is another; supported living for a younger adult, or a carer living in the house, is different again. One hundred and thirty six agencies in Cambridgeshire are registered to provide care of one kind or another, and the first task is working out which pattern of support you are actually buying.
Matching the pattern of visits to the need
Short calls suit prompting and supervision; they do not suit anyone who needs unhurried help to move safely. Where two people are required for transfers, that has to be built into the visit from the start rather than discovered later. If the aim is to regain independence after a hospital stay, say so, because support designed to rebuild confidence looks different from long term maintenance.
Where the ratings fall
Outstanding is represented in Cambridgeshire and a large share hold Good, including MiHomecare Cambridge, Bircham House, Affinity Trust Domiciliary Care Agency East and Trust Homecare Solution Limited. Others such as Ray Care Services are rated Requires Improvement. A substantial group, among them Cambridge Care Services and Kingdom Healthcare Services Ltd, have registered too recently for a first inspection and carry no rating yet.
The questions that tell you most
Ask how many different carers will come in a fortnight, since familiar faces matter more than almost anything else. Ask what happens when a call runs late and who is told. Ask how medicines are recorded and how a complaint would be looked into. Where an agency has no rating, ask how long the manager has been in post, how carers are trained and supervised, and whether a current client family would speak to you.
Getting an Assessment and Arranging the Funding
A care needs assessment is worth having whether or not the council is likely to pay, because it produces a written account of what help is required that any agency can work from. It is free and open to any adult who appears to need care and support.
What the assessment covers
An assessor talks through mornings and evenings, washing and dressing, meals, medicines, mobility and how safe someone feels alone in the house. A relative already providing help can request a carer's assessment of their own needs. Nothing is settled on the day and the outcome comes in writing.
Financial help and direct payments
Adult social care in this area is the responsibility of Cambridgeshire County Council Adult Social Care, which carries out a financial assessment once needs have been agreed. Savings and income are measured against national thresholds, while the home someone continues to live in is excluded entirely for care delivered there. Where support is agreed, a direct payment allows a household to commission the agency it has chosen rather than accept an allocated one.
What it will cost
Rates are quoted by the hour or by the call and rise for evenings, weekends and bank holidays, and again where two carers must attend together. Live in care is priced weekly on a different basis. Ask for written rates covering travel time and mileage, the notice period and late cancellations, because those terms vary far more between agencies than the advertised hourly figure.
