Choosing the right care home in Kent and what to look for
Using the ratings to cut a large field down
With a field this wide, the Care Quality Commission rating is the quickest way to reduce the list to something workable, though it should never be the only filter applied. Kent contains homes rated Outstanding, such as The Kent Autistic Trust at one hundred and eighteen Beaver Lane, alongside homes currently rated Requires Improvement or Inadequate, and a number registered too recently to carry a rating at all. A rating describes what inspectors found on a particular visit, so the date matters as much as the word. Where a home has recently changed hands or changed manager, an older rating may say little about how it runs today.
Narrowing by location and by need
Geography does a great deal of the work in an area of this size. A home that suits the family for visiting is worth more than a marginally better rated home an hour further away, because regular visits are one of the strongest protections a resident has. Beyond location, be clear about what is actually needed. Every provider on this page is a residential care home, meaning personal care and daily support rather than nursing, and some specialise in dementia, learning disability or autism.
What a visit reveals that a report cannot
Reports describe systems, while visits reveal atmosphere. Go at a busy time, ideally around a meal, and watch how staff speak to residents rather than to visitors. Ask how long the manager has been in post and what staff turnover looks like, since stability in the team tends to show up in the quality of care. Ask to see a bedroom that is genuinely available rather than a show room, and notice whether communal areas are being used or merely furnished.
Arranging and funding a placement
Starting with a care needs assessment
A care needs assessment is the formal route into arranging support, and anyone who appears to need care can ask for one whatever their savings. The assessment looks at daily living, mobility, medication, continence and safety, and it results in a written statement of what care is needed. Relatives can contribute their own account, which is often the part that captures how things really are at home. A separate carer's assessment is available to the person doing most of the supporting.
Where the council fits in
Once needs are established, a financial assessment decides who pays. Kent County Council is responsible for both assessments and for arranging funded placements where someone qualifies, taking income, savings and property into account. Even people who will clearly fund their own care are entitled to an assessment and to advice, and requesting one creates a record that proves useful if funds later run down.
What the fees usually involve
Residential fees are quoted weekly and vary considerably across Kent, so ask each home what the figure includes and what falls outside it. Extras commonly cover hairdressing, chiropody, outings and certain therapies. Where a family selects a home costing more than the council will pay, a third party contribution is usually required, and it needs to be affordable for the long term rather than the first year alone.
