What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?

A care home provides accommodation with personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals and the routine of the day from care staff. A nursing home provides that same support with registered nurses on duty, which is needed where there are wounds to dress, complex medication or a condition requiring clinical oversight. The Care Quality Commission registers homes for one or both, and each profile states which applies. Home care sits outside both, since carers come to the person at home.

What should I ask a home care agency in Shropshire before agreeing anything?

Choosing a Home Care Agency in Shropshire

The decision comes down to reliability far more often than it comes down to price. An agency that arrives when it said it would, with a carer the person recognises, is worth more than one offering a slightly lower hourly rate and a rotating cast of faces. Questions that reveal how an agency really works

Ask how the rota is built and how a carer calling in sick at six in the morning is covered. Ask whether agreed times are firm or approximate, and what counts as a late visit in the agency's own terms. Ask who writes the care plan, how often it is revisited and whether the family can read the notes from each call. Ask about training for the specific condition in question, since dementia, stroke recovery and safe moving and handling each require something particular.
