What Care at Home in Leicestershire Involves and What to Look For
Two things decide whether an arrangement at home holds together: whether the hours genuinely match the need, and whether the same people keep turning up to deliver them. Almost everything else is detail. Working out the first is a job for an assessment, and testing the second is a job for the questions you put to each agency.
Building the Week Around the Person
Packages are assembled from visits of a set length at set times, and the shape of them varies enormously. One call in the morning to help somebody wash and dress is a world away from four calls a day with two carers at each, and both are ordinary requests. Sleeping nights, waking nights and longer sessions that give a relative a real break are all arrangeable, and some agencies provide care where a worker stays in the house. Describe the week honestly, including what a family member currently absorbs, and use that as the brief.
The Line Between Care and Nursing
Personal care covers washing, dressing, help to the lavatory, moving safely around the house, meals, and prompting or administering medication, with companionship, shopping and light housework often provided alongside. Clinical treatment is a separate matter, coming from a district nurse or a service registered to provide it. Say at the outset what is involved medically, because a reliable agency will tell you where the edge of its registration lies instead of promising to cope.
What the Inspection Record Shows
Judgements across this listing run the full length of the scale, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, with a number of agencies not yet rated because they registered fairly recently. The word is a summary; the report is the evidence. It sets out whether calls were made on time, whether staff turnover left people meeting strangers, how medicines were handled and whether complaints produced any change. Where improvement was demanded, note the date of the visit and ask what has been done about it since.
Getting an Assessment and Sorting the Funding
Asking for a Care Needs Assessment
Any adult who appears to need help with daily living can request a care needs assessment, free of charge and whatever their savings amount to. It is arranged through Leicestershire County Council Adult Social Care, the authority responsible for assessing need and arranging funded support in this area. An assessor works through getting up, washing, dressing, meals, medication, mobility, continence and contact with other people, then records in writing what support would meet those needs. A relative already carrying that work can ask for an assessment of their own situation at the same time.
Deciding Who Pays
Funding rests on a financial assessment weighing income and capital against thresholds set nationally. The result may be that the council meets the cost in full, contributes towards it, or that the household funds its own care. Where support is funded, a direct payment can usually be requested, keeping the choice of agency with the family. Charges belong to each agency, differ across this listing, and generally rise for evenings, weekends and bank holidays, so collect written quotes.
Once Visits Have Started
The agency should visit before anything begins and produce a care plan naming the tasks, the timings and the risks. Expect a review after the first few weeks, when everyone can see how the arrangement is working, and at intervals thereafter. Hours can be increased, reduced or shifted as circumstances change, and a package that has stopped fitting should be reopened rather than quietly endured.
