Arranging and Paying for Residential Care on the Isle of Wight
How a placement gets funded is settled through two assessments carried out in sequence, and neither of them starts with a price. What a person needs is established first, and the question of what they can contribute follows on from that. Families who reverse the order often spend weeks considering homes that were never suitable.
Asking for a care needs assessment
Any adult who appears to need support is entitled to a free assessment, whatever their income or capital. A practitioner will go through the ordinary run of a day, covering washing, dressing, eating, mobility, medication and how safe someone is when left alone, and will set the findings down in writing. Isle of Wight Council adult social care carries out these assessments and arranges funded support for people who are eligible. Even where a family fully expects to pay privately, that written outcome is a useful yardstick when a home explains what it can provide.
Fees and what they take in
A financial assessment then examines income, pensions, savings and capital to arrive at a reasonable contribution. Paying the full fee, receiving help towards it and having the cost met entirely are all possible results, and where a person's needs are principally clinical the NHS may fund the placement instead. Weekly fees vary between homes according to the support offered, the room itself and the level of supervision required, so ask for the figure in writing along with anything charged on top, such as chiropody, hairdressing or trips out. If a third party top up is proposed, be clear about who is committing to it and what would happen if their circumstances changed.
Comparing Fifty Residential Homes and Narrowing the Field
A list this size is an advantage, but only once you have a way of cutting it down. Location and registered specialism will remove a good number of homes immediately, and inspection history will do the rest.
Taking the ratings seriously
Ratings on this page run the full length of the scale, from two homes rated Outstanding through a large group rated Good to six rated Requires Improvement and two rated Inadequate, with two not yet rated. That range means the ratings are doing real work here and should not be skimmed past. Open the report for any home you are considering, look at what inspectors described around medicines, staffing and care planning, and check the date, because a poor rating from some time ago may predate a change of management. A home without a rating is generally one that registered recently rather than one giving cause for concern.
What you can only learn by turning up
Visit at a busy point in the day, ideally around a meal, and see three or four homes rather than one. Watch whether staff speak with residents instead of about them, whether people are occupied, and how long a call bell rings before anyone comes. Ask about overnight staffing, turnover among carers, dementia training and what the home does when a resident's needs grow beyond what it is registered to meet. Highfield House, Kynance Residential Home, Eden House, The Limes Residential Home and Quarry Oaks Care Home all have profiles here with the contact details for arranging a visit.
