About Penshurst
Penshurst is a residential care home in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We also offer respite stays for people who need a break or whose families do. Our starting point is that this is where people live, not where they are placed. People have their own rooms arranged as they want them, a say in the food, and a genuine hand in how the household runs. Where somebody can do something themselves, our job is to make that possible rather than to do it faster on their behalf. Being on the Island shapes daily life in ways we make use of. The sea is close, the town is walkable, and people become known in the shops and cafes they use regularly. Being recognised locally does more for somebody's confidence than any amount of structured activity, and we would rather support that than replace it. We are careful about routine and about warning people of change. For a good number of those living here, knowing exactly what is happening and who will be there is what makes a day manageable, so we do not rearrange things lightly. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change, and we would rather act on a small complaint now than discover a large one later.
