The single word is only the opening. Check the date of the visit, then read what inspectors said about staffing levels, dignity, medicines and the response to earlier findings. A home rated Requires Improvement that has replaced its manager and acted on the report may be on a better path than one coasting on an older Good, while an Inadequate rating calls for a very frank conversation.

What to look for when you visit

Go at a busy time rather than a quiet afternoon, and use your own eyes and nose. Notice whether residents are dressed, occupied and spoken to by name, whether the place smells genuinely clean, and whether staff have a moment to answer questions. Ask how many people are on duty overnight, how long the team has worked there and how often agency staff are used, because turnover reveals more than fresh paint ever will.
