Comparing the care homes in Lincolnshire
Bringing a long list down to size
Travelling time changes how a list this long should be read, because a home twenty miles away is a very different proposition from one in the next street. Relatives who can visit without planning a day around it tend to visit far more often, and regular visitors do more for a resident's wellbeing than any brochure describes. Apply distance first and the field usually becomes something a family can genuinely study. Rating, size and specialism can then be weighed against one another across a handful of homes rather than hundreds.
Reading a rating properly
Ratings across the two hundred and eleven homes here run from Outstanding through to Inadequate, with some homes not yet rated, so the word at the top of an entry carries real information. It is still only a summary. The report behind it judges safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness and leadership separately, and a home may do well on one and poorly on another. Check when the inspection took place as well, since a change of owner or manager since then can make an older report a poor guide to the home today.
What the visit tells you
Go at a busy time rather than mid morning, ideally around a meal, and watch how staff talk with residents instead of how they talk to visitors. Ask how long the manager has been in post, what turnover among care staff has been like, and what the home does when someone becomes unwell overnight. Homes such as Ashtree House, Chimneys Care Home and Sandpiper Care Home each hold a full profile here with their inspection history attached.
Arranging and funding a placement
Requesting a care needs assessment
An assessment of need is the formal starting point and can be requested by anyone who appears to need care, whatever their savings. It examines washing, dressing, eating, mobility, medication and how safely someone manages on their own, then records in writing what care is required. Relatives are entitled to give their own account, which often conveys what a single visit cannot. A separate carer's assessment is available to whoever has been providing most of the support.
What the council contributes
A financial assessment follows and settles the question of contribution. Lincolnshire County Council is responsible for both assessments and for arranging funded placements where someone qualifies, weighing income, savings and property in the process. An assessment is worth requesting even where a family expects to pay privately, both for the advice that comes with it and because it creates a record should capital reduce in the years ahead.
Weekly fees and what falls outside them
Fees are quoted by the week and vary widely between homes, so ask each one to spell out exactly what the figure covers. Hairdressing, chiropody, outings and some therapies are frequently charged separately. Where a family chooses a home costing more than the council will fund, a third party contribution bridges the gap, and it needs to remain affordable over several years rather than only at the point of moving in.
