About SENSE - 25 Horsegate
25 Horsegate is a small residential home supporting adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with sight or hearing loss. We also offer respite stays. Being small is the point rather than a limitation. This is a house and it feels like one. People have their own space and their own belongings, and the household is run with the people who live in it rather than around them. Meals, shopping, laundry and how the place looks are all decisions people take part in. Communication is at the centre of what we do. Several of the people we support have both a learning disability and sight or hearing loss, which means the usual ways of getting information across simply do not work. So we learn each person's own way, whether that is signing on the hand, objects of reference, touch, particular routines or a familiar sequence of sounds and movements. It takes time and it is the most important thing we do. We think carefully about lighting, contrast, noise and how we announce ourselves before doing anything, because being touched or moved without warning is frightening for anybody who cannot see or hear it coming. For autistic people we keep routines stable and give notice of change well in advance. Our staff are trained accordingly and we keep the team consistent so that people are supported by those who know them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.
