What a visit should tell you

Arrive when the home is busy, ideally around a meal, and watch how the place runs rather than following the tour you are offered. Look at whether residents are up and occupied, how quickly call bells are answered, and whether staff speak to people by name and at eye level. Ask how many permanent staff are on each shift, how long they have worked there and how much agency cover is used overnight. Ask directly what happens if needs increase, because a residential home cannot always keep somebody who later requires nursing.

Comparing the shortlist

Distance from family counts for more than most people expect, since the homes that work best are the ones relatives can visit often and without ceremony. Beyond that, compare what the fee covers, whether a trial stay is possible, and how the home supports residents who prefer quiet to a busy activities programme. Three visits will usually settle the question.
