What nursing care in Northumberland involves and what to look for

Where nursing care differs from residential care

The distinguishing feature is clinical. A nursing home keeps registered nurses on site around the clock, which allows it to manage needs that a residential home cannot safely take on: complex wound care, catheters, tube feeding, unstable long term conditions and support through the final stages of an illness. Everything a residential home offers is still there, including accommodation, meals and help with washing and dressing. Thirty five homes across Northumberland hold this registration, so the question for most families is not availability but suitability.

Staffing is the thing to interrogate

Ask how many registered nurses are rostered during the day and overnight, and how often those shifts are filled by agency staff rather than the home's own team. Ask what the ratio of care staff to residents looks like at the quietest point of the night. Ask how long the manager has been in post and what turnover has been among nurses specifically, since a home that cannot retain nurses will struggle with everything that depends on them.

Reading the ratings on this page

Percy House holds the single Outstanding judgement in this listing, and twenty nine homes are rated Good. Five sit at Requires Improvement. A rating below Good is a reason to read rather than to dismiss, because findings sometimes concern governance, care records or medicines administration rather than the daily experience of residents. Read the report, note what inspectors said needed to change, then ask the manager directly what has changed and how they know it has.

Getting an assessment and working out the funding

The care needs assessment

Anyone who appears to need care and support can request an assessment, free of charge and regardless of savings. It examines mobility, continence, medication, nutrition, memory and the clinical support required, and results in a written care and support plan that sets out what a placement would need to provide. Contact Northumberland County Council adult social care, which is responsible for carrying out assessments and for agreeing any funded support that follows. A relative who has been providing care can ask to be assessed in their own right at the same time.

Three separate funding routes

A financial assessment looks at income, savings and capital, and for a permanent placement it usually takes the value of a property into account unless a partner or certain other relatives still live there. Depending on the outcome the council may meet part or all of the cost. Alongside that, NHS Funded Nursing Care contributes towards the nursing element and is paid straight to the home. Where someone's needs are primarily health related rather than social, NHS Continuing Healthcare can cover the entire placement. These are assessed separately, so ask about each rather than waiting to be offered them.

Fees and what to pin down early

Establish what the weekly charge actually includes and what is billed on top, such as chiropody, hairdressing, continence products or escorted appointments. Ask how often fees are reviewed and by how much they rose last time. If the council is funding a place it will set a budget based on assessed need, and where a family prefers a more expensive home someone may be asked to pay the difference, so it helps to understand that arrangement before falling in love with a particular building.
