Planning and paying for nursing care in Surrey
Nursing care costs more each week than residential care, because a qualified nurse has to be on duty at all hours, and that arithmetic tends to arrive early in a family's thinking. Working through need first and money second keeps the search realistic, and it stops a shortlist filling up with homes that were never going to be available.
Beginning with a care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to a free assessment, whatever their savings, and it is the proper starting point even for a family expecting to pay the full cost. Surrey County Council carries out that assessment and produces the care and support plan that follows it, recording the level of support needed and whether nursing care is the right answer. Homes rely on that plan when they judge whether they can meet somebody's needs safely, so it is worth having before you start enquiring.
Where the money comes from
A financial assessment follows, setting capital, income and property against the national thresholds to work out what the council will contribute and what the person pays. Alongside that, NHS funded nursing care is paid directly to a home towards the nursing element of the fee for residents who need it, whoever is meeting the rest of the cost. Where somebody's needs are primarily health needs rather than social care needs, NHS continuing healthcare can cover the placement in full, and it is always worth asking whether an assessment for it has been considered.
What the weekly fee covers
Fees differ between homes according to room, location and the level of clinical support given. Ask for a written breakdown of what the fee includes, what sits outside it, when fees are reviewed and by how much they have risen in recent years. Ask too what happens if private funds run down, since a home that has thought about that question will answer it plainly.
Choosing a nursing home in Surrey and what to check
With one hundred and sixty five nursing homes listed for Surrey, the difficulty is not finding options but reducing them to a handful worth visiting. Location, clinical registration and the published inspection record will do most of that filtering for you.
Matching clinical need to registration
Every home on this page is registered to provide nursing, which means a qualified nurse is on duty rather than on call. That matters for wound care, catheter and stoma management, complex medication, and conditions likely to change quickly. Where the support needed is help with washing, dressing, meals and company, a residential home may suit better and cost less. Reading the inspection record
Ratings across Surrey include Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement, with some homes not yet rated because they are newly registered or awaiting a first inspection. Check when a report was published, since a rating from a while back describes a home that may have changed in either direction. Look at which of the key questions inspectors marked down, especially safety and leadership, and ask the manager what has been done since.
What to notice on a visit
Visit twice if you can, once by arrangement and once at a busier moment such as the middle of the morning. Ask how many nurses are rostered on a night shift, how the home covers absence, and how long the registered manager has been in post. Watch how staff speak to residents who cannot easily speak back, because that tells you more about a home than any brochure.
