Care Homes in County Durham

Weighing the care homes serving County Durham against one another is a good deal easier when they appear together, which is what this listing sets out to do. Eighty seven residential homes match the search, each of them somewhere a person lives permanently with care staff on the premises rather than somewhere carers call in by arrangement. The inspection picture here is a strong one, with eight homes holding Outstanding, seventy five rated Good, three at Requires Improvement and one not yet rated. Durham County Council is the authority that carries out care needs assessments and decides, through a financial assessment, what funded support someone receives towards the weekly fees. Homes holding Outstanding include Grizedale, Hawthorn House, Eden House and Highview House. Where so many homes are rated well, the inspection reports rather than the ratings will tell you which ones suit your family, so open each profile and read what the inspectors actually recorded.

Choosing the right care home and what to look for

Reading a rating when most are strong

Every home listed is registered with the Care Quality Commission, and each profile carries the rating from its most recent inspection alongside the full report. A rating draws together five judgements covering safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and leadership, which is why two homes both rated Good can feel quite different once you are inside. With the great majority of homes here rated Good or better, the rating alone will not narrow your list, and the report becomes the more useful document. Homes holding Outstanding have been found to exceed what is expected in at least one of those five areas, and the report explains exactly which and why.

What a visit should tell you

Go at a busy hour rather than the quiet slot a home suggests, ideally around a mealtime, and see more than one so you have a genuine comparison. Watch whether staff speak to residents in passing and by name rather than only while carrying out a task, and whether people in communal areas look occupied rather than simply seated. Ask how many staff are on duty overnight, how often agency cover is needed across a month, and how quickly families are told about a fall or a change in health.

Matching the home to the person

County Durham covers a lot of ground, and the practical question of how easily family can visit matters more over time than most people expect at the outset. Check the home is registered for the type of care needed, particularly where dementia support or nursing input is involved, because a second move is difficult for everybody. Ask about trial stays, visiting arrangements, how much furniture a resident may bring, and whether residents can keep their own routines for waking and settling.

Arranging a place and funding it

The care needs assessment

A move into residential care normally follows a care needs assessment, which is free to anyone who appears to need support whatever savings they hold. A practitioner examines how someone manages washing, dressing, eating, medication and moving about, and whether those needs can still be met safely at home. The written outcome records which needs are eligible and becomes the basis for the decisions that follow. Requests go to Durham County Council adult social care, and a relative giving regular unpaid help can ask for a carer's assessment of their own.

Deciding who pays

Being assessed as needing residential care does not by itself mean the council funds it. A financial assessment weighs savings, capital, property and income, and the outcome decides whether the council contributes, whether the cost is shared, or whether the placement is paid for privately. Where needs are chiefly clinical rather than social, NHS continuing healthcare funding may cover the cost instead and is assessed by a separate route. Self funders can still ask the council for advice about choosing a home.

Fees and the extras beyond them

Homes quote a weekly fee covering the room, meals, laundry and personal care, with nursing homes charging more because registered nurses are on duty. Larger rooms and private bathrooms usually carry a premium, while hairdressing, chiropody, outings and some therapies are commonly billed separately. Ask for the fee schedule in writing, check exactly what sits outside it, and find out how often fees are reviewed and what notice of an increase you would be given.
