About Poplar Lodge
Poplar Lodge is a residential home in Bishop Auckland supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people living with mental health conditions. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We run this as somebody's home rather than as a service they happen to live inside. The people here have their own routines, their own interests and their own firm views about how the house should work, which is as it should be. Support is built around each person: what they want to do with their time, the help they need to do it, and the parts of life they would rather manage themselves. Where somebody is living with a mental health condition, consistency matters more than almost anything. A difficult stretch is part of the pattern rather than a crisis, and treating it as a crisis rarely helps. We aim to be steady, and to be there on the harder days as well as the easy ones. Communication gets careful attention too. So much of what goes wrong in this kind of support comes down to somebody not being understood or not being given enough time, and we would rather work slowly than get that wrong. Respite stays give family carers a proper break while the person staying gets a change of scene on their own terms. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Visitors are welcome, and anyone considering a place here should come and see it.
