What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?

What the rating does and does not tell you

All one hundred and ninety homes gathered here are registered with the Care Quality Commission, and the ratings across Nottinghamshire run from Outstanding through Good to Requires Improvement, with a number of newly registered homes not yet inspected. The single word on the front of a report is a useful filter, but it is the five underlying judgements that repay attention: whether the home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led. A home rated Good overall may have a weaker score in one of those areas, and a home rated Requires Improvement may already have acted on the findings under new management. Check the inspection date as well, because a report several years old describes a different staff team from the one working there today.

What to notice on a visit

Arrange to see any home you are seriously considering, and try to arrive around a mealtime. Watch how staff speak to residents who are not asking for anything, whether people are up and occupied or sitting untouched in front of a television, and how quickly call bells are answered. Ask what happens on a bad night, how families are contacted when someone becomes unwell and how many permanent staff are on duty compared with agency cover. Smaller homes such as Rose Farm and larger ones like South Moor Lodge Care Home feel quite different in daily life, and the right answer depends entirely on the person moving in.

Matching the home to the person

Think about what would still make an ordinary day worth having: a garden, a familiar neighbourhood, a room that takes their own furniture, visiting hours that suit a working family. Confirm whether the home can meet specific needs such as dementia support, mobility assistance or a particular diet, and ask what happens if needs increase later. A home that cannot continue to care for someone as they become frailer means a second move at the worst possible moment.
