Question 1

Which providers in Southam appear on this listing?

Accepted Answer

One hundred and fifty providers registered with the Care Quality Commission match this search, and each has a profile you can open from this page. Availability shifts constantly, since agencies take on new work only where they have carers free in the right area at the right times of day. Shortlisting by rating first and then telephoning about capacity will save time. Each profile carries the inspection history, so a good deal of the comparing can be finished before you make contact.

Question 2

What should I ask a home care agency before agreeing anything?

Accepted Answer

Ask how many different carers will visit over a fortnight and whether the agency will commit to a small consistent team. Ask what happens when a carer is off sick, how quickly the office lets you know a call will be late, and who is reachable at weekends. Ask about minimum call lengths, whether travel time is charged, and how rates change in the evenings and at weekends. Ask to see a sample care plan and find out how often it is reviewed and who reviews it.

Question 3

How does home care differ from a care home or a nursing home?

Accepted Answer

Home care brings a carer to the person's own home for an agreed number of visits, leaving them in their own surroundings and in control of their day. A care home provides accommodation with personal care and staff on the premises at all hours, which suits someone who needs help unpredictably rather than at set times. A nursing home holds a further registration and keeps registered nurses on duty for wound care, injections or clinical observation overnight. A care needs assessment should help establish which of the three actually fits the situation.

Question 4

Can Warwickshire County Council pay for care at home?

Accepted Answer

It can, where the needs assessment concludes that support at home is the appropriate way to meet the person's needs. A financial assessment of income and capital then determines what they contribute towards the cost and whether public funds cover any of the balance. Some people are funded in full, others contribute part and others pay privately throughout. Ask Warwickshire County Council about direct payments, which allow a family to choose and manage the agency themselves within an agreed budget.

Question 5

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Southam?

Accepted Answer

Contact Warwickshire County Council and request an adult social care needs assessment, which the person themselves, a relative or a professional such as a district nurse may all ask for. It is free and there is no savings threshold to meet before one takes place. A practitioner will discuss washing, dressing, mobility, medication, eating and safety around the house, and may suggest equipment that reduces the amount of help needed. If a hospital discharge is imminent, say so when you make contact, as it affects how quickly things are arranged.

Question 6

How far ahead should families start looking?

Accepted Answer

Start before the situation becomes urgent, because the needs assessment, the financial assessment and any funding decision each take time before care can begin. Agencies with good reputations often have limited capacity in particular villages and at popular times of day, especially the early morning call. Where a hospital discharge is driving events, families are frequently given only a few days to put something in place. Having spoken to two or three agencies in advance makes that far less stressful to arrange.
