    • Care Home

St Davids Residential Home is a care home in Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period. Coming to live in a care home is a significant step, and the early weeks count for far more than any account of the building. We use them to learn about the person rather than to settle them into our routine. What they did for a living. What they will not be persuaded to eat. What time breakfast has always happened. Whether they would rather have company or the door shut and the radio on. Small facts, and between them they are most of what turns a room into somewhere that feels like home. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid surprising people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we look for the cause instead of simply trying to settle them. Relatives often know exactly what helps, and we would much rather be told at the start than work it out across six months. The rest of the day belongs to the people living it, and we take the practical side seriously too: food worth looking forward to, medication handled carefully, prompt attention when somebody is unwell. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking residents and relatives what needs to change.

    • Care Home

Sutton Park Grange is a residential care home in Sutton Coldfield, caring for older people who can no longer manage safely on their own, and supporting people living with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss and younger adults. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how their day goes. We support people living with dementia, and that work depends on continuity above all. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what sits behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a difficult one. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period and for family carers who need a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better test is the everyday evidence, whether people are up and occupied and whether relatives feel able to raise a concern early.

    • Care Home

At Bretby House, we provide residential care for older adults in the heart of Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. We support people living with dementia, mental health conditions and physical disabilities, and we also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay while their usual support is being arranged or while family carers take a break. We know that moving into a care home, or choosing one for someone you love, is a significant decision. It brings with it a lot of questions, and we take those questions seriously. Our aim is to make sure that every person who comes through our doors feels known as an individual, not simply as a resident. That means taking the time to understand what matters to each person, what their routines look like, what they enjoy, and what makes them feel comfortable and at ease. Our team works hard to create an atmosphere that feels genuinely homely. We want people to feel settled, safe and as independent as possible within their daily lives. For those living with dementia, we are particularly mindful of how the environment and the way we communicate can make a real difference to how someone feels day to day. We were assessed by the Care Quality Commission most recently with an overall rating of requires improvement, and we want to be straightforward about that. We have taken the findings seriously and we are working through the areas identified with a clear focus on getting things right. We believe in being honest with families and prospective residents rather than glossing over challenges. If you would like to visit Bretby House, ask questions or simply have a conversation about whether we might be the right fit for you or your relative, we would be very glad to hear from you.

    • Care Home

Homecroft Residential Home is a care home in Sutton Coldfield. We provide a home for older people, including many living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to help somebody find their feet again after a spell in hospital. We would rather be judged on ordinary things than on anything grand. Knowing how everybody likes their tea. Remembering which chair belongs to whom. Understanding who wants company from breakfast onwards and who would much rather be left with a newspaper. Helping somebody up when they wake rather than when it suits a rota. We ask about these preferences, write them down and expect them to be followed, because that is most of what makes a place feel like home instead of an institution. Dementia support is a large part of our work. Steady routines, familiar faces and patience do more good than anything else, along with a genuine effort to understand what somebody is telling us when words have become difficult. Families are welcome whenever it suits them and we keep in touch openly rather than only ringing when there is a problem. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. It reflects reliable everyday practice, which is what most families are actually looking for. If you are considering a care home in this part of Birmingham for someone close to you, please come and look round, meet our residents and staff and ask us anything you like.

    • Care Home

The Gables is a residential care home in Sutton Coldfield. We support older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia, and we take respite bookings for families needing a short break or a period of extra support. We try to keep the home feeling domestic. People wake in their own time, keep their own belongings around them, decide how the day goes and are not rushed through anything. Meals are meant to be enjoyed rather than got through, and visitors are welcome through the day without arranging it first. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We would rather tell you that plainly than have you come across it somewhere else. We know which areas were flagged, work is under way, and we will go through it honestly with any family considering us or already trusting us with a relative. People making this kind of decision deserve straight answers far more than they deserve a polished paragraph. What we will always do is tell you when something has gone wrong and what we are doing about it, and raise it early when a relative's needs are changing rather than presenting you with a decision already taken. If you are looking at residential or respite care in this part of Birmingham, please come and see us and ask whatever you want to ask.

    • Care Home

Inglewood Residential Rest Home provides residential care in Sutton Coldfield for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. We also take planned respite stays. We try to make this feel like a home rather than somewhere people have been placed. Residents get up when they want, spend their days as they choose, keep their own belongings about them and have visitors whenever it suits them. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals and the practical running of the place, and they do it in a way that leaves people as much say as possible over their own lives. The small things are what residents notice. A familiar face on shift, tea made the way you like it, being asked rather than told, and somebody spotting that you are not quite yourself today. For residents living with dementia that familiarity matters far more than any programme of organised activity, and where somebody has a physical disability we agree together how they want to be helped and how much time they need rather than how much time is convenient. Respite stays give family carers a genuine rest, and they let somebody find out what we are like before making a bigger decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Sutton Coldfield

Dementia care is a set of skills rather than a type of building, and those skills are unevenly distributed. All six providers here are registered for personal care rather than nursing, so what separates them is how well staff are trained, how long they stay, and how the home handles the parts of the condition that are hardest to live with. Those are the things to ask about first.

The questions that matter most

Ask what dementia training staff receive, how often it is refreshed, and who leads on it within the home. Ask how walking at night, broken sleep and reluctance to eat are managed, since those are the real tests of a home's approach. Watch how a member of staff responds to someone confused or upset, because one exchange of that kind is worth more than any policy you will be shown. Inglewood Residential Rest Home, Sutton Park Grange, Homecroft Residential Home, Bretby House and The Gables each have a profile here.

Interpreting the judgements

For the four homes rated Good, compare the assessed areas individually rather than stopping at the headline, and check how recently the inspection took place. For the two rated Requires Improvement, establish what the inspector actually identified, whether it concerned the safety of care or record keeping, and what the manager says has changed since. Where a report is several years old, ask who owns the home now and how long the present team has been in place. Then ask at what point the home would say it could no longer meet someone's needs.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Sutton Coldfield

How needs are assessed in Sutton Coldfield

Anyone who appears to need care and support has a right to have those needs assessed, whatever their finances. For people living in Sutton Coldfield this runs through Birmingham City Council, which is responsible for adult social care assessment and for funded support. Where dementia is involved, be specific about memory, orientation, communication and any risk or distress, and do not understate the difficult episodes. A relative providing care can ask for a carer's assessment in their own name alongside it.

How the cost is divided

Each home sets its own weekly fee, reflecting the room as much as the support provided, so a written quotation is the only dependable figure. The financial assessment establishes how the cost divides between the council and the person receiving care, weighing income, savings and property against the national thresholds. Where the council contributes it will have a view on a reasonable weekly rate, and any difference from a home's price should be identified before a move rather than after one. Ask what the fee excludes and how much notice is given of an increase.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Sutton Coldfield

How many dementia care homes are there in Sutton Coldfield?

Sutton Coldfield has 6 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 20 CQC registered care homes in Sutton Coldfield: 4 Good, 2 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Sutton Coldfield were inspected most recently?

The Gables (10 March 2026), Inglewood Residential Rest Home (16 December 2023) and Bretby House (12 October 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which residential care homes in Sutton Coldfield appear on this page?

You will find six residential care homes on this page, each one registered with the Care Quality Commission for Sutton Coldfield. Inglewood Residential Rest Home, Sutton Park Grange and St Davids Residential Home are included. What the list cannot tell you is who has a vacancy today, so treat it as a guide to registration rather than to availability. The ratings currently run four Good and two Requires Improvement.

Which questions matter most?

Push hardest on continuity. Ask about staff turnover over the past year, how night shifts are covered, and how long the manager and senior staff have been in post. Watch how a member of staff responds to someone confused or distressed, and ask who sets that approach. Cover meals, laundry, visiting and belongings too, since those are the things that shape a week. Then ask what the inspectors raised and what has changed as a result.

Dementia care home or dementia nursing home: what is the difference?

Both provide personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, medication and the routine of the day. Only a nursing home employs registered nurses on duty, and that is what allows it to take on complex wound care, feeding tubes and health conditions that are not stable. None of the six providers listed for Sutton Coldfield holds nursing registration. It is worth asking any home directly what it would and would not take on.

Can Birmingham City Council pay towards this care?

Yes, in the right circumstances. Birmingham City Council assesses the need first and then assesses the finances, and support depends on both. Ask what weekly figure the council works to, since a difference between that and the home's price becomes a practical problem. Ask early what weekly rate the council regards as reasonable, because that is where shortfalls appear.

Who do I ask for a care needs assessment?

Ask Birmingham City Council for a care needs assessment; it is the authority responsible for carrying one out. The request can be made by telephone or online and costs nothing. Be specific about memory, orientation, communication and any risk or distress, and do not understate the difficult episodes. Keep a note of when you asked, since assessments are sometimes slower to arrive than families expect.

When should we start looking?

Before it feels urgent, because dementia rarely gives much warning when it changes. Begin while there is still no deadline, and you can visit twice, compare properly and change your mind. Leave it late and the decision gets made by whoever happens to have space. Where the situation is already urgent, say so plainly when you telephone, since homes sometimes keep a little flexibility in reserve.
