    • Care Home

Here at Lonsdale Midlands New Street North, we are a care home based in West Bromwich, Sandwell, and we take genuine pride in the community we have built here. We support adults with a range of needs, including those living with dementia, learning disabilities and autism, alongside residents who simply need a little extra help with day to day living. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person and their family will ever make. It is not something we take lightly. From the moment someone walks through our doors, we want them to feel that this is a place where they belong, where their routines matter, their preferences are respected, and their voice is heard. Our approach to dementia care is thoughtful and person centred. We understand that living with dementia affects not just memory but identity, confidence and sense of self, and we work hard to support each resident in a way that feels familiar and reassuring rather than clinical or institutional. For those with learning disabilities or autism, we recognise how important consistency, trust and the right environment can be. We take time to understand what makes each person comfortable, what helps them feel settled, and what enables them to enjoy life on their own terms. We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, and we see that as recognition of the everyday work our team puts in, rather than a ceiling to stop at. If you would like to find out more about life at Lonsdale Midlands New Street North, or if you are considering whether we might be the right fit for yourself or someone you love, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We are always happy to have a conversation.

    • Care Home

Pegasus Care Home is in West Bromwich, and we support a wider range of people than most residential homes take on. Older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Adults with learning disabilities and autistic people. Adults living with mental ill health. People with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Younger adults. People living with an eating disorder, and people in recovery from problems with alcohol or drugs. Respite stays are available too. A household this varied only works if people are treated as individuals rather than as categories. Support is agreed with the person, written in terms they recognise, and reviewed as things change. Some residents need a great deal of practical help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility. Others mainly want a settled place to live, a team who do not judge, and a house that holds together when a bad week arrives. We should be open about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have worked through the findings with our team, and those areas are where our effort is concentrated at present. We would rather tell you that ourselves and be asked about it than have you find it later. Families and professionals considering Pegasus for somebody are welcome to visit on an ordinary day and question us closely.

    • Care Home

We are Caldene Rest Home in West Bromwich, in the borough of Sandwell. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we also take respite stays. Residential care means helping with what has become hard work and leaving everything else in the hands of the person. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth having. For health needs beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover them, and we are clear with families about where that line falls. Where dementia and a sensory impairment sit together, which happens often, we check the simple explanation first. A good deal of what gets written down as confusion turns out to be a conversation nobody could hear properly. We try to get the environment and the communication right before drawing conclusions about the person. For residents with a physical disability the practical details matter most. Enough time that a transfer is unhurried, equipment set up properly, and asking the person how they prefer it done rather than assuming we know. Respite guests are assessed and welcomed exactly as permanent residents are. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

Allerton Court is a residential care home in West Bromwich caring for older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia. What we provide is help with the ordinary business of the day: assistance to wash and dress, medication managed properly and on time, meals cooked on the premises, support to get about safely and staff available through the night. For residents living with dementia we keep the rhythm of the day predictable and the staff around them consistent, and we lean on what families can tell us about a person's history. We should be straightforward with you about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have been working through the points raised, particularly around record keeping, staff supervision and the consistency of care planning, and we would encourage anyone considering the home to ask us about that directly rather than take our word for it. Relatives are involved in that work, since they are best placed to judge whether things have actually improved. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Families across Sandwell are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in West Bromwich, providing a home for older people who need help to get comfortably through the day. We try to keep the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people bringing their own furniture and pictures, keeping their own hours where they can, and carrying on with what they enjoy. We help with personal care, mobility, meals and medication, and we look after people living with dementia. What works with dementia, in our experience, is nothing elaborate: familiar staff, routines that stay steady and enough time that nothing has to be rushed. An unhurried day is usually a good day. Respite stays are available as well, whether that gives a family carer a proper rest after a long stretch of managing at home, or lets someone try the home for a short period before deciding about anything longer. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We think keeping it depends on hearing about small problems while they are still small, so we ask residents and relatives often and we act on what they tell us. Do come and see us if you are looking at homes in this area. A look round, a chat with the people who live here and a cup of tea will tell you more than any brochure.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in West Bromwich

Most families come to the money last and find it reshapes the shortlist, which is why the assessment belongs at the start. A care needs assessment is free, can be requested by anyone and establishes whether residential dementia care is the right level of support. Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council carries out that assessment and the financial assessment that follows it, and a carer living with the person is separately entitled to an assessment of their own.

How the financial assessment is applied

Savings, income and, in a permanent placement, usually the value of a property are measured against the national capital thresholds. Capital above the upper threshold means fees are met privately. Below the lower threshold only income is counted, with a weekly personal allowance protected, and a deferred payment arrangement can delay the sale of a house.

Costs and the allowances often missed

Residential dementia care costs less than nursing care because the support is personal rather than clinical, though homes with specialist dementia provision often sit above the standard residential rate locally. Attendance allowance and the daily living part of personal independence payment are not means tested and are frequently overlooked by people funding themselves. Where a council contribution is below a home's private fee, confirm in writing whether a third party payment is expected.

Choosing between dementia care homes in West Bromwich

Lonsdale Midlands Ltd - New Street North, Hall Green Care Home and Caldene Rest Home are each rated Good. Allerton Court and Pegasus Care Home currently hold ratings of Requires Improvement. A lower grade is not an automatic exclusion, but it does mean reading the report in full and asking the manager directly what has changed since the inspection.

What the grades cover

Each rating summarises one inspection across whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led. A shortfall in record keeping is a different matter from a shortfall in how residents are treated, and the report says which it was. Check the date of every report, and ask to see any action plan where a home sits below Good.

What to notice on a visit

Watch whether residents are occupied or simply seated, and ask what happens when someone becomes distressed in the evening. Ask how many staff hold dementia training, how often it is refreshed and what the turnover is like. Ask whether the garden is secure and used, and what the home would do if needs progressed beyond its registration.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in West Bromwich

How many dementia care homes are there in West Bromwich?

West Bromwich has 5 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 16 CQC registered care homes in West Bromwich: 3 Good, 2 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in West Bromwich were inspected most recently?

Pegasus Care Home (17 November 2023), Lonsdale Midlands Ltd - New Street North (15 November 2022) and Hall Green Care Home (12 May 2022) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia placement?

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council can fund or part fund a placement where the needs assessment confirms residential dementia care is appropriate and the financial assessment shows capital below the upper threshold. Anyone above that threshold meets the fees privately, although the needs assessment is still worth having on record. A deferred payment agreement may be available where most of the capital is held in a property. Where the council rate falls short of a home's fee, ask in writing who would be liable for the difference.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in West Bromwich?

Ask Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council for an adult social care needs assessment, which anyone can request, including a relative acting with the person's consent. There is no charge and the outcome does not depend on income or savings. An assessor will look at memory, daily living, mobility, medication and night time needs before recommending a level of care. A carer can also ask for a separate carer's assessment in their own right.

How far ahead should a family start looking?

Looking early is worth doing even when a move still feels distant, because dementia progresses unevenly and the decision often arrives sooner than expected. Six to eight weeks allows for repeat visits, a proper read of the reports and a resolved funding position. Where grades vary as much as they do here, that reading time matters more than usual. A crisis admission or hospital discharge rarely allows it.

Which homes in West Bromwich provide dementia care?

Five residential care homes covering West Bromwich are registered to support people living with dementia: Lonsdale Midlands Ltd - New Street North, Allerton Court, Hall Green Care Home, Caldene Rest Home and Pegasus Care Home. Lonsdale Midlands Ltd - New Street North, Hall Green Care Home and Caldene Rest Home are each rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. Allerton Court and Pegasus Care Home hold ratings of Requires Improvement. Each profile links through to the inspection report behind its grade.

What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in West Bromwich?

Ask what proportion of staff hold dementia training, how often it is refreshed and how high turnover is, since familiar faces matter a great deal to someone with memory loss. Ask how the home responds to distress or agitation and whether any restrictive practice is used. Visit at a mealtime and watch how residents needing help to eat are supported. Where a home holds Requires Improvement, ask what has changed since the inspection.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides residential personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals, prompting medication and supervision day and night. A dementia nursing home adds registered nurses on duty at all hours and can therefore manage clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or palliative nursing. Many people live well in residential dementia care for years and only need nursing in the later stages. All five homes listed for West Bromwich are residential rather than nursing.
