    • Care Home

Here at Hilton Rose Retirement Home, we provide residential and dementia care for older people, younger adults, and those who need short term respite support in the heart of Walsall. We are proud to have received a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine effort and commitment of everyone who works here. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone steps through our doors, whether as a prospective resident, a family member, or a new arrival, we want them to feel at ease. Our aim is simple: to make Hilton Rose feel like home, not just a place to be looked after. Our team supports people living with dementia with patience and consistency, building routines and relationships that bring comfort and familiarity. For those joining us for respite care, we work hard to ensure the stay feels settled and purposeful rather than temporary or unsettling. We also welcome younger adults who require residential care, and we take care to ensure their individual needs, interests, and preferences are respected every step of the way. Life at Hilton Rose is shaped by the people who live here. We listen to what matters to residents, what they enjoy, what they find difficult, and what would make their days feel meaningful. Care plans are built around the individual, not the other way around. We are based in Walsall and are proud to be part of this community. Families are always welcome to visit, ask questions, and stay involved in their loved one's life here. If you would like to find out more about what we offer, please do get in touch. We would love to hear from you.

    • Care Home

Stanbrook Care Home provides residential care in Walsall for older people and younger adults. We support people living with dementia, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss, and we also take planned respite stays. We treat this as a home first and a care setting second. The people living here have their own rooms, their own routines and a genuine say in how the place runs, and our staff fit around them rather than running everybody to one timetable. Support covers personal care, medicines, meals, money and the practical work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage without us. The detail is where most of the real work lies. How a person communicates, what makes an environment feel manageable, how much warning they need before something changes, which parts of the day they want to handle alone, and how they want to be helped with a physical disability are all things we learn from the person rather than assume. For residents living with dementia we keep the day familiar and the pace gentle. Respite stays give family carers a proper rest and let people see what we are like before making a longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

We are Highgate Lodge Care Home in Walsall. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support younger adults and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather tell you that ourselves than have you find it somewhere else. We have worked through the findings in detail, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the way we supervise and support our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we give relatives the same account of it that we give the regulator. What we are working to protect in the meantime is everyday life here. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you wake, where you take your breakfast, how sociable you feel today: those stay your decisions. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail, knowing somebody's history, recognising early what unsettles them and going at their pace rather than the rota's. If you are considering Highgate Lodge for a relative, please come and see us and ask about the rating directly. We will give you a straight answer and show you what we have changed.

    • Care Home

Havencrest Residential Care is a care home in Walsall. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people with a physical disability, and that range means our days are not uniform. Residential care is sometimes described as a last resort. We do not see it that way. For a lot of the people who come to us, moving in is the point at which the struggle stops: meals arrive, medication is handled properly, there is someone awake at night, and the energy that went into simply getting through the day can go somewhere better. Practical support is the foundation. Personal care offered without fuss, help with mobility for those who need it, and a building that works for people using a wheelchair or a frame rather than one they have to fight. Beyond that, what matters is attention. Knowing that a particular person hates a crowded room, or that another will only really talk while the washing up is being done, is the kind of knowledge that makes care work. We keep families close. You know the person you are entrusting to us better than we do, at least at first, and we would rather you told us when something is not right. The Care Quality Commission has not yet issued us an overall rating. Please come and see the home, unannounced if you prefer.

    • Care Home

Here at Gorway House, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Walsall. Our home supports residents living with dementia as well as those who need general residential care, and we also offer respite care for people who need a short term stay, whether that is to recover after a period of illness or to give a family carer some time to rest. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. When someone moves in with us, we take time to get to know them properly, learning about their routines, their preferences, and the things that matter most to them. We want each person to feel genuinely at home here, not just looked after. Our team works hard to create an environment that feels calm, familiar and respectful. For residents living with dementia, we pay particular attention to consistency and reassurance, understanding that the people in their lives and the rhythms of the day make a real difference to how settled and comfortable they feel. We were recently assessed by the Care Quality Commission and received an overall rating of requires improvement. We want to be straightforward about that. We have taken the findings seriously, and we are actively working through the areas identified to make meaningful changes. We believe in being honest with the families and residents who trust us, and we are committed to demonstrating real progress over time. If you would like to find out more about Gorway House or come and see us for yourself, we would very much welcome the opportunity to show you around and answer any questions you have. We are based in Walsall and are always happy to have a conversation about how we might be able to help.

    • Care Home

Bescot Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in Walsall. We care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with mental health conditions, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays for those who need care for a shorter period. Because the people who live here have quite different needs, we plan around the individual rather than running the house to one pattern. Somebody living with dementia needs calm, familiarity and staff who know their history well enough to steady them. A younger adult may want privacy, independence and support that stays in the background until it is asked for. Both are possible in one house if the planning is done properly and revisited when things change. For people with sight or hearing loss the practical details decide whether somebody stays independent, so lighting, familiar layouts, unhurried conversation and equipment that works are ordinary practice here rather than extras. Walsall is home for most of our residents and we help them keep up with family, appointments and the places they know. We should be plain about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accept that finding and are working through the areas it identified. • Care Home

Harden Hall is a residential care home in Walsall. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We aim for an ordinary, comfortable household. Residents get up when they wake, eat what they actually enjoy and spend their days as they choose. Some are sociable and are downstairs from breakfast onwards. Others would rather have their own room, their own television and a quiet word with somebody who is not in a hurry. Both are perfectly reasonable and neither needs explaining. People usually arrive having struggled at home for a while, and the first few weeks are about settling rather than fitting in. We learn routines rather than imposing them, and we encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures so a room becomes theirs quickly. Dementia care here rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Where somebody is distressed, we look for the cause. Having younger adults living here as well means we are careful not to let anyone's day drift into a pattern built around much older residents. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Harden Hall.

    • Care Home

We are Alexia Court Care Home in Walsall. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we also offer respite stays. Residential care means helping with what has become hard work and leaving everything else in the hands of the person. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth having. For health needs beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover them, and we tell families plainly where that line falls. Dementia takes up much of our day, and what helps most is knowing the person. Someone who spent forty years in a particular trade or raising a family nearby still carries that with them, and a conversation that connects with it can change an afternoon completely. For residents with a physical disability the practical details matter most: enough time that nothing is rushed, equipment set up properly, and asking the person how they prefer things done. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Leighswood is a residential care home in Walsall. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people with visual or hearing impairment. We offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We try to run this as a home rather than an institution. Residents bring their own things, keep their own routines and make their own decisions about the shape of the day, and our job is to give the right amount of help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility without taking over what somebody can still manage for themselves. Dementia care is a substantial part of our work. We spend time learning about each person's life, their habits and the things that settle them, because that is what allows staff to respond to the feeling behind a difficult moment rather than simply to the behaviour. Where a resident has a sight or hearing impairment we adapt how we communicate and keep things where they expect to find them. For residents with mental health needs we work closely with the community teams involved and try to be predictable, which is usually what helps most. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say that plainly. We know which areas were identified, we are working through them with the whole team, and if you visit we will tell you honestly where we have got to. Families are welcome at Leighswood, and we would much rather hear a concern early.

Drake Court Residential Home is in Walsall. We are a permanent home to older people and to some younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. Many are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We want to be honest with you about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than have you come across it elsewhere. We understand what the inspectors raised with us, we are working through it, and we will discuss any part of it with families, professionals and the people who live here. What we are working towards is a house that feels like a home, with food cooked on the premises and visitors welcome without appointment. Please come and see us and ask us anything.

Mill Lodge is a residential care home in Walsall. We provide a permanent home for older people and for younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. What we offer is residential rather than nursing care. Staff are here through the night as well as the day to help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and everything else that becomes hard to manage alone. District nurses and doctors come in when clinical care is needed, and we work alongside them. Supporting a mixed group of ages and needs under one roof takes thought. A younger adult finding their footing again after a period of poor mental health wants something quite different from an older resident who is living with advanced dementia. We plan around that rather than pretending everyone wants the same day. Meals are cooked here. People choose their own bedtimes. Visitors are welcome rather than tolerated, and we would far rather families came in often and told us plainly when something is not right. Respite stays are available for planned breaks and for people who need a period of support before going home. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Pelsall Hall is a care home in Walsall providing residential care for older people, including residents living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available too. Our aim is a household rather than a facility, and that shows in small repeated decisions. Whether somebody is woken or left to sleep. Whether a cup of tea comes with a conversation. Whether the person helping you dress has time to work at your pace instead of theirs. When those go right, most of the rest follows. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does more than any technique. We keep the routine recognisable, hold on to staff so faces stay the same, and ask families about the life somebody had before they came to us. Knowing that a resident spent forty years on the railways, or cannot bear being fussed over, changes every exchange that follows. Where people have physical disabilities, dependable practical support matters enormously. Equipment used correctly by everyone, transfers done the same careful way each time, and a building someone can actually get around. Respite stays give family carers a real rest and let people try us before committing. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please visit at an ordinary time of day, talk to residents and relatives, and ask us whatever you want to know.

We are a residential care home near Walsall in Staffordshire, and we think of the house as the home of the people who live here rather than a place they have moved into. Rooms are theirs to arrange, days are theirs to shape, and we fit around that. Most of the people we support are older, though not all, and we welcome younger adults whose needs are better met in a smaller setting than a large one. We provide residential care for people who need help with personal care, mobility and the ordinary business of getting comfortably through a day. We also support people living with dementia, and we have learned that what helps most is calm, familiarity and staff who know a person well enough to notice when something is not right before it becomes a difficulty. We support people living with mental health needs and people with a physical disability, and we try to keep the focus on what someone can still do rather than on what has become harder. Respite stays are available too, which can give a family carer a genuine break or give someone the chance to try the home before making a longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are pleased with it, and we take the view that keeping it means listening properly when residents and relatives tell us something could be done better. You are welcome to visit, have a look round and stay for a cup of tea. Seeing a place for yourself tells you far more than anything written down.

The Hamptons Retirement Home is a residential care home in Walsall. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We keep our work deliberately focused. Residential care for older people is what we do, and we would rather do it attentively than spread ourselves across every kind of need. Residents tell us when they like to wake, what they want to eat, how much help they want with washing and dressing and how they prefer to spend the day, and the day is built from those answers rather than from a rota that suits us. Dementia care runs through a great deal of what we do. We take time to learn a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that help them feel settled, because that knowledge is what allows us to reassure someone who is anxious rather than correct them. We keep the day predictable and explain changes in advance where we can. Independence is protected wherever it exists, and company matters as much as practical help. Families are welcome whenever they want to visit and we would far rather hear a concern early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

At Oak Lodge Residential Home in Walsall, we provide a warm and homely environment where older adults can feel safe, supported and genuinely at ease. We specialise in older person care, residential care and dementia care, and we work hard every day to ensure that the people living with us are treated with dignity and real respect. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that trust lightly. From the moment someone comes through our doors, whether for a visit or to move in, we want them to feel that this is a place where they belong. We take time to get to know each person, understanding their routines, their preferences and the things that matter most to them, so that the care we provide fits around their life rather than the other way around. For those living with dementia, we are particularly mindful of how much the right environment and the right approach can make a difference. We focus on familiarity, calm and consistency, always looking for ways to support wellbeing and maintain a sense of identity and independence wherever possible. We are open about the fact that our most recent Care Quality Commission rating indicates there are areas where we need to improve, and we are actively working through those improvements with commitment and transparency. • Care Home

Shire Oak House is a residential care home in Walsall. We are home to older people and to younger adults who need support with everyday life, including people living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions and people with a visual or hearing impairment. What we offer is residential rather than nursing care. Staff are here day and night to help with washing, dressing, medication and meals and to keep the household running, while local doctors and district nurses look after clinical needs. For a great many people that is exactly the right level of support, and it costs them far less of their independence than a clinical setting would. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A day that runs in a familiar order, the same faces turning up and surroundings that make sense will settle somebody more reliably than anything else we could do. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what explains them to us later. Sight and hearing loss get real attention rather than being worked around. Somebody who cannot follow what is happening will withdraw, and withdrawal is too easily mistaken for decline. Respite and short stays are available. Please ring us if you would like to look round Shire Oak House and talk things over.

    • Care Home

Homestead is a residential care home in Walsall, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than looked after efficiently. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays where it is, food that is recognisable and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We also support younger adults, and we plan their interests and routines on their own terms rather than folding them into a pattern designed for older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather be judged on what you see on an ordinary day than on anything written here, so please visit and ask us the questions that matter to you.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Walsall

What residential dementia support provides

All sixteen providers here are residential care homes, meaning staff are on site through the day and night to help with washing, dressing, meals, medication and the ordinary shape of a day. For someone living with dementia, predictability counts for considerably more than decor. Familiar faces across shifts, a routine that holds steady, and staff who recognise rising distress before it becomes a crisis are what make a placement work. Sixteen options is enough choice to be properly selective rather than to take what is offered.

Taking a split rating picture seriously

Nine homes rated Good against seven at Requires Improvement is a genuinely mixed market, and it means the rating is doing real work here. Pelsall Hall, Harden Hall, Waters Edge Care Home, Stanbrook Care Home, Mill Lodge Residential Care Home, Alexia Court Care Home and Homestead Care Home are among those holding Good. Gorway House, Bescot Lodge Care Home, Shire Oak House, Highgate Lodge Care Home, Oak Lodge Residential Home, Leighswood and Drake Court Residential Home currently sit at Requires Improvement. That said, a rating compresses a long inspection into one word. A home marked down on recruitment records is a very different proposition from one marked down on medication handling or on how residents are spoken to, and only the report distinguishes them.

The questions that actually separate homes

Ask what dementia training staff complete and who in the building leads on it. Ask how the home supports someone who walks with purpose, becomes unsettled as the afternoon draws on, or no longer recognises family. Ask whether a resident may bring their own furniture and whether mealtimes bend around the person rather than the kitchen rota. Visit at a busy hour and watch how staff address the people they are helping. Where a home sits at Requires Improvement, ask directly what the inspector found and what has changed, and treat an evasive answer as information.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Walsall

The assessment comes before the money

The person needing care is entitled to a care needs assessment, and that is the proper starting point. It is carried out by the Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council social care team, the authority responsible for assessing need and arranging funded support, and anyone who appears to need help may request one whatever their savings. The assessor considers memory, safety, mobility and the help already in place, then recommends whether a residential placement is the right answer at all.

Working out who pays

A separate financial assessment examines income, savings and, for a permanent move, property. Where capital falls below the national threshold the local authority may meet part or all of the weekly fee. Dementia care typically costs more than standard residential care because of the staffing it requires, so ask each home plainly what the fee covers, what is billed as an extra, and how often fees are reviewed. Some people are funded instead through NHS continuing healthcare, which applies where needs are primarily clinical rather than social.

Keeping the search in hand

Start earlier than feels necessary, because assessments take weeks and the better regarded homes fill. Filter on rating and travelling distance, visit three or four, then compare what you saw rather than what you read. Every profile here links through to the full inspection report for that home.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Walsall

How many dementia care homes are there in Walsall?

Walsall has 17 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 45 CQC registered care homes in Walsall: 9 Good, 7 Requires improvement, 1 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Walsall were inspected most recently?

Pelsall Hall (4 September 2026), Mill Lodge Residential Care Home (23 March 2026) and Highgate Lodge Care Home (19 November 2025) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which providers in Walsall offer dementia care?

17 residential care homes serving Walsall are listed on this page, each registered to support people living with dementia. They include Pelsall Hall, Harden Hall, Waters Edge Care Home, Stanbrook Care Home, Alexia Court Care Home and Homestead Care Home. Registration describes what a home is permitted to provide rather than how well it provides it, so the rating and the report behind it deserve attention. Opening a profile gives you the published detail for that provider.

How does a dementia care home differ from a dementia nursing home?

A residential dementia care home provides personal care and supervision, with trained care staff supporting daily life and a general practitioner or community nurse called in when needed. A dementia nursing home also employs registered nurses on site, which suits people with continuing clinical needs such as complex medication, wounds or feeding support. All 17 providers listed on this page are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input looks likely before long, that difference should shape the search from the outset.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Walsall?

Ask how many staff are on duty overnight and how long the current team has been in post, because consistency matters enormously to someone with dementia. Ask what dementia training staff receive and how they respond when a resident becomes distressed or disorientated. Ask to see a week of activities and whether relatives may visit without arranging it first. Given that seven homes here sit at Requires Improvement, also ask what the last inspection found and what has demonstrably changed.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Walsall?

Contact the adult social care team at Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council and ask for an assessment for the person needing care. Anyone who appears to need support is entitled to one regardless of income, and the request may come from the person, a relative or a professional on their behalf. An assessor will discuss memory, daily living, safety and the support currently in place. The written outcome then sets out the recommended level of care and opens the funding question.

Can Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where both the care needs assessment and the financial assessment support it. Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council first establishes that residential care is appropriate, then considers income, savings and property to work out the person's contribution. Where capital falls below the national threshold the authority may meet part or all of the weekly fee. Some people are funded instead through NHS continuing healthcare, which applies when needs are primarily health related.

How far in advance should we start looking for dementia care?

Starting several months before a move feels pressing gives you a real advantage, because assessments take weeks and the better rated homes fill quickly. Looking early also lets the person needing care visit and express a preference while they are able to. Families who begin only after a crisis, such as a hospital discharge or a carer falling ill, almost always face fewer options. With nearly half the local list at Requires Improvement, having time to be selective matters here.
