- Care Home
Kingsley Cottage in Blackfords, Cannock, provides residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and those living with mental ill health, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and some younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Supporting a mixed group under one roof means we cannot run the home to a single pattern, and we do not try. What we aim for is a place where people are taken as they come and where support is built around the individual. Some residents want a very structured day. Others want the opposite, plenty of freedom and somewhere steady to come back to. Where someone has a physical disability or reduced sight or hearing, we pay attention to the practical details. Equipment that suits the person, a layout that stays predictable, things kept where people expect to find them, and staff who adapt how they communicate rather than expecting the person to manage. With dementia, familiar faces and a steady rhythm do most of the work, and we treat distress as something with a cause. Where mental ill health is part of the picture we work closely with community teams. Respite stays suit family carers needing a break and people recovering after illness. Please come and visit Kingsley Cottage and ask us anything.

- Care Home
Kingsley Cottage is a small residential care home in Cannock, Staffordshire, and we provide a home for older people who need support with daily living. Respite stays are available too. Being small is the point rather than a limitation. In a house this size everybody is known properly, staff are not strangers, and the day can follow the people who live here rather than a timetable. Residents decide when to get up, where to sit, whether they want company or quiet, and what they would like to eat. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, doing it quietly and leaving as much privacy and choice with the resident as we can. Where somebody can still manage a task themselves, that is theirs to keep. Dementia care is a significant part of our work. We keep the daily rhythm and the surroundings steady, give people time to find their words instead of finishing their sentences, and take trouble to learn about earlier life, because knowing what somebody did for a living and what they loved tells us a great deal once language becomes unreliable. Families usually hold that story, and we ask for it early rather than guessing. Respite bookings are planned with the same care as permanent moves, because a break only rests a family if the person staying here is genuinely settled. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us anything you like.

- Care Home
Littleton Lodge is a residential care home in Cannock, Staffordshire. We support older people, including those living with dementia and those living with mental ill health, and we also support people with visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Sensory impairment is something we give particular thought to, because it is so easily overlooked in a busy home. If someone cannot see well, furniture that gets moved and crockery that does not contrast with the table make life harder than it needs to be. If someone's hearing is poor, a noisy lounge can leave them isolated in a room full of people. We train staff to approach, speak and assist in ways that work for the person rather than expecting the person to adapt. For residents living with dementia, routine and familiarity do most of the heavy lifting. We keep staffing as consistent as we can, we learn people's histories, and we treat agitation as something with a cause rather than something to be quietened. Everyday life here is not elaborate. Decent food, a warm and clean home, people who know you, and help arriving before you have to ask twice. Residents and families tell us that is what they actually wanted. Respite is useful for recovery after hospital or to give a family carer a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to visit Littleton Lodge and see how we do things.

- Care Home
Here at The Grange, we are a residential care home based in Cannock, Staffordshire, and we are proud to support a wide range of people within our local community and beyond. We provide care for older adults, including those living with dementia, as well as younger adults, people with learning disabilities or autism, and those with physical disabilities or visual and hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for people who need short term support, whether that is to give a family carer a well earned break or to assist someone during a period of recovery or change. The breadth of what we do means that we genuinely get to know a diverse mix of people, and we think that makes us a richer, more thoughtful community. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or family will make, and we do not take that lightly. Our aim is for everyone who comes through our doors to feel genuinely at home, not just comfortable in the physical sense, but known, respected and listened to. We take time to understand each person's history, preferences and routines, because good care is really just good attention to the individual in front of you. Our team in Cannock work hard to maintain an environment that feels warm and calm rather than clinical. We believe that daily life in a care home should still feel like daily life, with proper meals, familiar comforts, meaningful activity and real conversation. We welcome visits from prospective residents and their families at any time, because we think the best way to get a feel for who we are is simply to come and see us. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to find out more.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Cannock
Why the assessment comes first
Dementia changes what a person needs over time, and an assessment is what captures where things stand now. The care needs assessment records how far memory, orientation, personal care, mobility, eating and safety have been affected, and that record is what shows which homes could realistically meet the need. Staffordshire County Council arranges the assessment and is also the body that agrees funded support, once a financial assessment has looked at capital and income. A relative providing unpaid care can request a carer's assessment in their own right at the same time. Where the diagnosis is recent, asking the memory service or general practitioner to share their records usually produces a fuller picture.
What a placement costs
Residential dementia fees are quoted weekly and cover the room, meals and personal care, with the rate reflecting the room and how much support is needed through the day and night. Where eligible needs are confirmed, the financial assessment fixes what the person contributes from capital and income, and the council meets the balance where the duty is its own. Families funding privately should obtain the weekly rate in writing and ask what is billed separately, which commonly includes hairdressing, chiropody and transport to appointments. Ask how often fees are reviewed, what notice of an increase is given, and what happens if needs rise and extra support becomes necessary.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Cannock
Two rated homes and two without a rating
Littleton Lodge and Kingsley Cottage hold Good ratings, and the reports behind them will show which areas inspectors found strongest, which is useful where dementia is the central need. The Grange Residential Care Home and Kingsley Cottage, Blackfords have no published rating, so there is no inspection history to lean on. In that position it is fair to ask when each registered, whether an inspection has been scheduled, and what quality monitoring the provider carries out in the meantime. It is also worth confirming exactly who each home is registered to support, since a short listing can group together homes with different purposes.
What a visit should tell you
The most informative moment is how staff respond when a resident becomes unsettled while you are present. Look for unhurried voices, no physical rushing, and a familiarity with the person's name and history. Ask what dementia training staff receive and how often it is refreshed, how life history and preferences are recorded and who actually reads them, and what the home does when someone declines personal care or will not eat. Check whether bedroom doors, bathrooms and corridors can be told apart easily and whether there is a safe place to walk. Ask how families are kept informed when something changes.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Cannock
How many dementia care homes are there in Cannock?
Cannock has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 9 CQC registered care homes in Cannock: 2 Good, 2 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Cannock were inspected most recently?
Littleton Lodge (26 November 2024) and Kingsley Cottage (19 October 2021) have the most recent CQC reports.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment for dementia care in Cannock?
Approach the adult social care team at Staffordshire County Council and ask for a care needs assessment for the person with dementia. The assessor considers memory and orientation, washing and dressing, mobility, eating, medication and the risks of remaining at home. Staffordshire County Council arranges that assessment, and a relative providing unpaid care can request a separate carer's assessment of their own needs. Having memory clinic letters or a recent diagnosis available helps the assessor reach an accurate view.
Can Staffordshire County Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can contribute, but only after a care needs assessment has confirmed eligible needs and a financial assessment has been completed. Staffordshire County Council then calculates what the person should pay from capital and income and meets the remainder where it has a duty to do so. Where health needs are pronounced, it is worth asking whether NHS continuing healthcare should be assessed, since that follows a separate route. Anyone whose means sit above the threshold arranges and pays for the placement privately.
Which providers in Cannock offer dementia care?
Four residential care homes are listed for Cannock: The Grange Residential Care Home, Littleton Lodge, Kingsley Cottage and Kingsley Cottage, Blackfords. All four are registered with the Care Quality Commission to provide accommodation together with personal care. Registration describes what each home may do rather than whether a room is free, so vacancies must be checked with the home directly. The profiles on this site carry the current rating and whatever inspection history exists for each one.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides a permanent room, meals and personal care, with staff supporting washing, dressing, eating, medication and daily routine. A dementia nursing home holds the extra registration needed to keep qualified nurses on site, which becomes necessary where there are pressure wounds, swallowing difficulties, unstable medical conditions or complex medication. All four providers on this Cannock page are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Because dementia usually progresses, ask at the outset how far each home can continue to support someone before a move would be required.
How far ahead should I begin looking for dementia care in Cannock?
Begin as soon as it is clear that support at home is nearing its limit, which in practice means two to three months before a move. That window covers the assessment, the financial assessment, visits to a shortlist and a calm handover of medication and routine. Many dementia placements are triggered by a crisis such as a fall or a hospital stay, and the realistic choice contracts sharply when decisions are made within days. Looking round a couple of homes while there is no pressure makes the eventual decision considerably easier.
What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Cannock?
Ask what dementia training staff have had, how settled the team is and how much agency cover the home uses overnight. Ask to see the activity record for the past fortnight rather than a general description, and ask how residents who are restless or withdrawn are included. Go through the weekly fee, what falls outside it, how reviews work and what happens if needs increase. Where a home has no published rating, ask what internal quality checks are carried out and whether an inspection is expected.
