- Care Home
Horse Fair Care Home is in Rugeley, providing residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and residents with a physical disability. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and whatever else has become difficult, and we leave people in charge of the rest. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to work out what lies behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a symptom. Where somebody has a physical disability the right equipment is in place and staff are trained to help with moving safely and comfortably, without fuss and without taking over. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time, and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out for the afternoon. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Please ring us if you would like to come and look round properly.

- Care Home
Copperdown is a residential care home in Rugeley. We care for older people who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays. Our everyday work is the ordinary business of a household run well. Help with washing, dressing and moving about at the person's own pace and as privately as possible. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here with real choice. Rooms that people make their own with their own furniture and pictures. Company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We did not dispute the findings. Since then we have strengthened staffing and supervision, tightened how we manage medicines and the records we keep, and had senior staff check the care actually being given rather than the care described on paper. That work is continuing and we are not going to claim it is finished. We would far rather raise this ourselves and answer questions about it honestly than leave a family to discover it later, and we are glad to go through the detail with anyone who asks. Anyone considering the home is welcome to visit, see how things are now, talk to the people who live here, and ask us anything at all.

- Care Home
Lanrick House is a residential care home in Rugeley, Staffordshire. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we support younger adults too. Respite stays are part of what we do. We try to run an ordinary household rather than a rota. People wake when they wake, eat when they are hungry, and are allowed an afternoon with nothing in it at all. There is a tendency in this sector to mistake activity for quality, and a warm unhurried day in which somebody was properly talked to is a good day by our reckoning. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what a person can still manage rather than what is fastest for us. Independence handed over for convenience is very rarely handed back. For those living with dementia we keep things where they were and learn enough of the life behind the person that their remarks make sense to us rather than sounding confused. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives who visit often are the best inspectors we have, and we would rather they told us plainly when we have slipped.

- Care Home
Nethermoor House is a residential care home in Rugeley, Staffordshire, and we provide a home for older people who need support with daily living. Respite stays are available too, planned in advance or arranged quickly when a family needs cover. Most of what makes a care home good is ordinary detail rather than anything grand. Knowing which chair is somebody's. Getting the tea right. Not hurrying a person through a wash because the morning is busy. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, doing it quietly and leaving as much privacy and choice with the resident as we can. Where somebody can still manage a task themselves, that is theirs to keep. Dementia care is a significant part of our work. We keep the daily rhythm and the surroundings steady, give people time to find their words instead of finishing their sentences, and take trouble to learn about earlier life, because knowing what somebody did for a living and what they loved tells us a great deal once language becomes unreliable. Families usually hold that story and we ask for it early. Respite bookings are planned with the same care as permanent moves, because a break only rests a family if the person staying with us is genuinely settled rather than merely safe. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us the awkward questions as well as the easy ones.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Rugeley
The assessment worth asking for
Before a shortlist carries much weight, it helps to have an independent description of what someone needs, which is exactly what a care needs assessment provides. Anyone who appears to need care and support can request one at no cost, whatever their savings. Staffordshire County Council carries out that assessment for people in Rugeley and arranges funded support where a person is eligible. The assessor looks at memory, daily living, mobility, safety and the help relatives already give, and the written outcome becomes the measure against which each home can be judged.
Understanding the fees
A financial assessment then sets income, savings and other capital against the national threshold. Above it a placement is usually self funded, and below it the council contributes towards the weekly cost. Homes set their own fees, so ask for them in writing, establish what the headline figure includes and what is charged on top, and ask how often and by how much they are reviewed. Where a health condition rather than help with daily living is driving the need for care, ask about NHS continuing healthcare, which is assessed on separate criteria and paid for through the health service.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Rugeley
How far the ratings take you
Three of these homes are rated Good and one has been rated Requires Improvement, so the grades narrow the field a little without settling it. A Requires Improvement judgement may rest on a single area while the care people receive was found to be safe, and homes do recover between inspections, so read the report rather than relying on the word. Find the specific concerns, ask the manager what has changed and what evidence there is, and check the date of every report, since an older one describes a home that may since have altered considerably.
What a visit reveals
Go at least twice and make one visit span a mealtime, because that is when the difference between a well run dementia home and a stretched one becomes plain. Ask what dementia training the team has had and how recently, and how staff respond to someone who is distressed or determined to leave. Look at the building through the eyes of someone disoriented: clear sight lines, safe space to walk, signage and lighting that still make sense. Then ask how often residents see the same faces, and how the home contacts families when something changes.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Rugeley
How many dementia care homes are there in Rugeley?
Rugeley has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 10 CQC registered care homes in Rugeley: 3 Good, 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Rugeley were inspected most recently?
Nethermoor House (30 December 2022), Heartlands Care Limited t/a Lanrick House (21 April 2021) and Copperdown Residential Care Home (11 March 2021) have the most recent CQC reports.
Can Staffordshire County Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can, where the person meets the eligibility criteria for care and the financial criteria as well. Staffordshire County Council carries out a care needs assessment first, then a financial assessment of income, savings and other capital to establish who pays. Where assets fall below the national threshold the council contributes towards the cost of the placement. Above that threshold the placement is normally self funded, although the council still has duties to give advice and in some circumstances to arrange the placement.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Rugeley?
Contact Staffordshire County Council and ask for an assessment of care and support needs, either for yourself or on behalf of a relative. The assessment is free and is not restricted by income or savings. An assessor will consider memory, mobility, personal care, safety at home and the support family or neighbours already provide. You will receive a written outcome describing the level of care considered necessary, which is useful whether the placement is funded publicly or privately.
How far in advance should I start looking for dementia care?
Begin sooner than feels urgent, ideally while the person concerned can still express a view about where they would like to live. Homes with strong reputations often hold waiting lists, and the care needs assessment and financial assessment both take time to complete. Searching during a settled period lets you visit more than once, read inspection reports carefully and ask follow up questions without pressure. If a hospital discharge is already being discussed, say so at your first contact, because that affects how quickly an assessment can be arranged.
Which providers in Rugeley offer dementia care?
Four registered providers appear in this Rugeley search, all of them residential care homes supporting people living with dementia. They are Nethermoor House, Copperdown Residential Care Home, Heartlands Care Limited trading as Lanrick House, and Horse Fair Care Home. Three currently hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and one has been rated Requires Improvement. Each profile links through to the home's own inspection record.
What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Rugeley?
Ask what dementia specific training staff receive and how recently it was updated. Ask how the team responds when a resident becomes anxious or agitated, and press for a real example rather than a written policy. Find out how consistent the staffing is, because familiar faces matter a great deal to someone living with dementia. It is also worth asking how the home involves relatives in care planning and how promptly it makes contact when a resident's condition changes.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, eating, medication and the rhythm of the day from staff trained in dementia support. A dementia nursing home provides all of that and additionally has registered nurses on duty at all hours for clinical needs such as wound care or complex medication. All four providers in this Rugeley search are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Should nursing care become necessary later a move may be required, so ask each home how it manages increasing health needs.
