    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Lichfield supporting adults with a wide range of needs. The people who live here include older people, younger adults, people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Supporting that range means paying attention to individuals rather than to categories. Some of the people here need a good deal of help with personal care, medication and moving about. Others need much less of that and a great deal more support with everything else: keeping to arrangements, managing money, getting out, handling the things that cause anxiety and having staff who know when to step in and when to leave well alone. So we start from what somebody wants their life to look like. People keep their own rooms and belongings, have a real say in how the house runs and choose how much they join in. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits. Where consistency matters, as it often does for autistic people, we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available as well as longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and ask us whatever you need to.

    • Care Home

Stowe Mount Care Home is a residential care home in Lichfield. We support older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with a physical disability, and those with a visual or hearing impairment. We try to keep life here recognisable. People arrive with decades of habit behind them, and there is rarely a good reason to change any of it, so we ask about routines, preferences and the things somebody would rather do without help, and then we build the day around those answers. Meals, sleep and quiet time belong to the person, not to a rota. Where somebody is living with dementia, familiarity does much of the work. Consistent staff, a calm pace and time to finish a thought all help, and we ask families to tell us about a person's history so that we can pick up conversations that mean something. For people with sensory or physical needs we look at the practical detail, how somebody prefers to be approached, what makes moving about easier and what makes it harder, and we keep checking that what we agreed still fits. We also offer respite and short stays. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We would rather you formed your own view, so please visit us at a time that suits you and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

Stowe Mount Care Home is a residential care home in Lichfield, supporting older people and younger adults from across Staffordshire, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. We think of ourselves as part of the city rather than a building set apart from it. People who move in have usually lived locally for years, and keeping those threads intact matters more than most brochures admit: the same newspaper, the same church, visitors who can walk round rather than make an expedition of it. The daily work is practical. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here and served at a table. Warm rooms that look like they belong to the person in them. Staff awake at night. Beyond that we try to leave as much as possible in people's own hands, because choosing when to get up, what to wear and how to spend an afternoon is no small matter when a great deal else has been taken away. For residents with a physical disability, accessible bathrooms, the right equipment and staff who know each person's preferred way of being helped to move keep daily life from shrinking. With dementia we work on familiarity and calm rather than correction, and relatives usually hold the detail that unlocks a difficult hour. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. The most useful thing you can do is turn up, have a cup of tea and talk to the people who live here.

    • Care Home

The Spires is a residential care home in Lichfield. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays. Our everyday work is the ordinary business of a household run well. Help with washing, dressing and moving about, given at the person's own pace and as privately as possible. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here with real choice. Rooms that people make their own with their own furniture and pictures. Company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We did not dispute the findings. Since then we have strengthened staffing and supervision, tightened how we manage medicines and the records we keep, and had senior staff check the care actually being given rather than the care described on paper. That work is continuing and we are not going to claim it is finished. We would far rather raise this ourselves and answer questions about it honestly than leave a family to discover it later, and we are happy to go through the detail with anyone who asks. Anyone considering the home is welcome to visit, see how things are now, talk to the people who live here, and ask us anything at all, including the questions people are often too polite to put first.

    • Care Home

We are Watford House Residential Home in Lichfield, Staffordshire. We provide a home for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we also offer respite stays. Our work is residential care, which means supporting people with the daily things that have become difficult while leaving them in charge of everything else. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely. Where health needs go beyond what we provide, we work with district nurses and GPs and we say so plainly rather than stretching to cover something we should not. Dementia shapes a good deal of our day. What helps most is knowing the person. Someone who spent their working life to a particular rhythm often still carries it, and a routine that respects that will go better than one imposed on top of it. When somebody is distressed we look for the cause rather than reaching for a technique, because there is usually a cause and it is often something straightforward. Respite stays are a proper part of what we do, and guests are assessed and welcomed as fully as anyone living here permanently. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Lichfield

What this kind of care provides

All seven providers here are residential care homes, so staff are present through the day and night to help with washing, dressing, meals, medication and the ordinary rhythm of a day. For someone living with dementia the building matters far less than how predictable it feels. Familiar faces across shifts, a routine that does not shift about, and staff who notice distress gathering before it breaks are what hold a placement together.

Reading a short and uneven list

Hawthorn House, Shenstone Hall and Watford House Residential Home currently hold Good ratings. Christ the King, Footherley Hall and The Spires sit at Requires Improvement. Stowe Mount Care Home and Bowbrook have no published rating as yet, which usually means registration is recent rather than that anything is wrong. With only seven homes covering the area, ruling out four of them on labels alone would leave almost nothing, so the reports are worth reading properly. A home marked down on records is a different prospect from one marked down on how residents are treated.

Questions that separate one home from another

Ask what dementia training staff complete and who leads on it in the building. Ask how the home supports someone who walks with purpose, becomes unsettled towards evening, or no longer recognises family. Ask whether a resident can bring their own furniture and whether mealtimes flex around the person. Where a home holds no rating yet, ask when the first inspection is expected and what the manager has put in place in the meantime.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Lichfield

The assessment comes first

Before cost enters the conversation, the person needing care is entitled to a care needs assessment. It is carried out by the Staffordshire County Council social care team, the authority responsible for assessing need and arranging funded support, and anyone who appears to need help may request one whatever their savings. The assessor looks at memory, safety, mobility and the support already in place, then recommends whether a residential placement is the right answer.

Deciding who pays

A financial assessment follows, examining income, savings and, for a permanent move, property. Where capital falls below the national threshold the local authority may meet part or all of the weekly fee. Dementia care generally costs more than standard residential care because of the staffing it demands, so ask each home what the fee includes, what is billed separately, and how often it is reviewed. Some people qualify instead for NHS continuing healthcare, which applies where needs are primarily clinical.

Making a short list work for you

Seven homes is few enough to visit most of them, which is an advantage. Compare what you actually saw rather than what you read, and treat the full inspection report linked from each profile as your most dependable evidence.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Lichfield

How many dementia care homes are there in Lichfield?

Lichfield has 8 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 9 CQC registered care homes in Lichfield: 3 Good, 2 Requires improvement, 3 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Lichfield were inspected most recently?

The Spires (20 March 2025), Watford House Residential Home (2 October 2024) and Christ the King, Footherley Hall (11 November 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which providers in Lichfield offer dementia care?

8 residential care homes serving Lichfield are listed on this page: Hawthorn House, Stowe Mount Care Home, Bowbrook, Shenstone Hall, Christ the King Footherley Hall, The Spires and Watford House Residential Home. Each is registered to support people living with dementia. Registration sets out what a home may provide rather than how well it does so, which is why the rating and report matter. Opening a profile gives you the published detail for that provider.

How does a dementia care home differ from a dementia nursing home?

A residential dementia care home provides personal care and supervision, with trained care staff supporting daily life and a general practitioner or community nurse called in as needed. A dementia nursing home also employs registered nurses on site, suiting people with continuing clinical needs such as complex medication, wounds or feeding support. All 8 providers listed here are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Where nursing input looks likely in the near future, that distinction should guide the search from the start.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Lichfield?

Ask how many staff are on duty overnight and how long the present team has been in post, since consistency matters greatly to someone with dementia. Ask what dementia training staff receive and how they respond when a resident becomes distressed or disorientated. Ask to see a week of activities and whether families may visit without arranging it in advance. Where a home has no published rating, ask when its first inspection is expected.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Lichfield?

Contact the adult social care team at Staffordshire County Council and request an assessment for the person needing care. Anyone who appears to need support is entitled to one whatever their income, and the request may be made by the person, a relative or a professional. An assessor will discuss memory, daily living, safety and the help already in place. The written outcome then recommends a level of care and opens the funding question.

Can Staffordshire County Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where the care needs assessment and the financial assessment both support it. Staffordshire County Council first establishes that residential care is appropriate, then looks at income, savings and property to decide the person's contribution. Where capital sits below the national threshold the authority may meet part or all of the weekly fee. Some people are funded instead through NHS continuing healthcare, which applies when needs are primarily health related rather than social.

How far in advance should we start looking for dementia care?

Several months ahead of any likely move is sensible, because assessments take weeks and a list of only seven homes offers limited slack. Looking early also lets the person needing care visit and voice a preference while they are able to. Families who start only after a crisis, such as a hospital discharge or a carer falling ill, find the choice narrows sharply. Building a longer list now costs nothing and makes the eventual decision calmer.
