Nursing Homes in Bristol City Of
By the time nursing homes in Bristol City Of come under discussion, a family is usually balancing urgency against the wish to get the decision right, often after a hospital admission has made returning home impossible. Bristol City Council carries out the care needs assessment that should sit behind any placement and decides what funded support a person qualifies for once income and capital have been assessed, so contacting it early removes one source of delay. The listing runs to thirty three registered nursing homes, and the published picture is reassuring: two rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, twenty nine rated Good, one at Requires Improvement and one with no rating published yet. Even when time is short, the inspection reports behind those profiles repay the attention, because they set out in detail what inspectors saw rather than what a brochure claims. Read two or three of them properly, note where a home was commended and where it was asked to put something right, and let what you find there shape the questions you put to each manager before anyone commits to a move.
Choosing a nursing home in Bristol City Of and what to look for
Looking past a uniform set of ratings
John Wills House and Horfield Lodge hold the two Outstanding judgements here, with twenty nine homes rated Good, one at Requires Improvement and one not yet rated. When almost every home carries the same word, the word itself sorts nothing. Begin with the date of each inspection, since an older judgement may describe a home that has since changed hands or managers, then read what was actually recorded about staffing levels, medicines management and how residents spend their days.
Nursing cover is the decisive question
Ask how many registered nurses are rostered during the day and overnight, and how much of that cover comes from agency staff rather than the home's own team. Ask what staffing looks like in the small hours. Ask how falls, pressure areas, infections and care at the end of life are managed, how readily a GP attends, how long the manager has been in post and what turnover among nurses has been. A home that cannot keep nurses will struggle with everything that rests on them.
What a visit adds
Go at a mealtime, when the pressure on staff is greatest, and watch how residents needing help to eat are supported. Time how long a call bell rings. Listen to the tone staff use with someone who cannot easily reply, and notice whether anyone has been left alone with nothing to occupy them. Then return on a different day at a different hour, because a single calm morning tells you very little.
Arranging care and working out who pays
The needs assessment
An assessment of need is free, available to anyone who appears to require care and unaffected by savings. It examines mobility, continence, medication, nutrition, memory and the nursing input required, and produces a care and support plan setting out what a home must be able to provide. Arrange one through Bristol City Council adult social care, which is responsible for assessments and for agreeing any funded support that follows. Relatives providing unpaid care can ask to be assessed in their own right at the same time.
Three routes to funding
The council route depends on a financial assessment of income, savings and capital, and in a permanent placement the value of a property is normally counted unless a partner or certain other relatives still live there. Because nursing is involved, NHS Funded Nursing Care contributes towards the nursing element and is paid directly to the home, while NHS Continuing Healthcare can meet the whole cost where a person's needs are primarily health related. Each is assessed separately, so raise all three by name.
Fees and the questions that matter later
Establish what the weekly charge includes and what is billed on top, whether chiropody, hairdressing, continence products or escorted appointments. Ask how often fees are reviewed and what the last rise amounted to. Ask what the home does when a self funding resident's capital runs down and council support becomes necessary, since not every home will continue a placement at a council funded rate.
