    • Care Home

Grove House in Ilkley, part of Abbeyfield, provides residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and some younger adults. Respite stays are available too. We want the home to feel like a household rather than an institution, which in practice means residents run their own days as far as they are able. People get up when they wake, eat what they actually like, and decide how much time to spend with others. Rooms are personalised from the start, and we encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures because a room that looks like yours settles you far faster. Where someone has a physical disability or reduced sight or hearing, we pay attention to the practical details. Equipment that suits the person, a layout that stays predictable, things kept where people expect to find them, and staff who adapt how they communicate rather than expecting the person to manage. Dementia care rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Ilkley and the moors above it give us good reasons to get out, and we do when the weather allows. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Grove House.

    • Care Home

Straven House Care Home is in Ilkley, and we support older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia and those living with mental ill health, along with people with physical disabilities and younger adults. Respite stays are available as well. A household this varied only works if people are treated as individuals rather than as categories, and that is genuinely how we run the place. Support is agreed with the person, written in terms they recognise, and reviewed as things change. Some residents need a great deal of hands on help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility. Others mainly want stability, company when they choose it, and a household that holds together through a difficult week. For residents living with dementia we keep routines and surroundings familiar and give people time instead of hurrying them along. For those living with mental ill health the valuable thing is usually steadiness: a team who know them and no drama when a bad stretch comes. For residents with physical disabilities the emphasis is on equipment that fits and transfers handled safely and without embarrassment. We would far rather hear about a small problem early than a large one later, so families who tell us when something is not right are doing us a favour. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to visit on an ordinary day and take your time deciding.

    • Care Home

Verbeia Grange Residential Home is in Ilkley, supporting older people from across the Bradford district and the surrounding dales, including many people living with dementia. We think of ourselves as part of the town rather than a building set apart from it. People who move in have usually lived locally for years, and keeping those threads intact matters more than most brochures admit: the same newspaper, the same church, visitors who can walk round rather than make an expedition of it. The daily work is practical. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here and served at a table. Warm rooms that look like they belong to the person in them. Staff awake at night. Beyond that we try to leave as much as possible in people's own hands, because choosing when to get up, what to wear and how to spend an afternoon is no small matter when a great deal else has been taken away. Dementia runs through much of what we do. Familiarity and calm work; correction does not. Arguing with somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody at all. Relatives usually hold the detail that unlocks a difficult hour and we ask for it at the start. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. The most useful thing you can do is turn up, have a cup of tea and talk to the people who live here.

    • Care Home

Glen Rosa and Kitwood House is a residential care home in Ilkley. We care for older people who need daily support, including those living with dementia, and we offer respite stays as a planned break for a family carer or while somebody recovers after illness. We are a residential home, and the aim is that it feels domestic rather than institutional. Residents bring their own furniture and pictures where there is room, choose when to get up and how the day goes, and eat food cooked here at hours that suit them. Our staff help with washing, dressing, mobility, medication and meals without hurrying anybody, and there are staff on hand through the night. When health needs come up we work with the local general practice, district nurses and therapists so that things are dealt with quickly and, wherever we can manage it, without anybody leaving the home. Dementia care rests on familiarity, patience and knowing the person. We hold routines steady, keep photographs and familiar objects within reach and follow somebody's own version of the day rather than arguing with it. Families tell us about the life a person has led, and that becomes some of the most useful information we hold. Ilkley and the moors above it feature in a lot of people's memories and, where health allows, in their weeks. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are always welcome.

    • Care Home

Abbeydale is a residential care home in Ilkley, providing a permanent home for older people who need help with the practical side of everyday life. We are a household rather than an institution, and the day here has the ordinary shape of meals, company, fresh air and rest. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, eating well and moving about safely, and just as importantly we are about, so that somebody notices when a resident is not quite themselves. We support people living with dementia, and we rely on continuity: staff who know a person's history and habits, a routine that does not keep changing, food that is recognisable and reassurance given as often as it is needed. We also care for residents with physical disabilities and those with a visual or hearing impairment, adapting how we communicate and how we help people move about. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a proper rest and letting a prospective resident get the feel of the home first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that, and clear that it has to be lived up to every day since. Please visit and see for yourself.

Greenholme House is a residential care home in Ilkley. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and some younger adults. Respite stays are available too. We want the home to feel like a household rather than an institution, which in practice means residents run their own days as far as they are able. Where someone has a physical disability we pay attention to equipment, access and the amount of help we offer. Doing too much for a person is a real loss and it creeps in easily, so we keep asking what somebody would rather manage themselves. Dementia care rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Ilkley

The question that matters most is not whether a home takes residents with dementia but how it works with them. Look for staff trained to respond to confusion and distress rather than contain it, a layout that helps people find their way, and a safe route for anyone who walks frequently. Ask how many staff hold dementia training and how often it is refreshed.

Where the grades sit

Abbeydale Residential Care Home holds an Outstanding rating, the highest the regulator awards and an uncommon one. Glen Rosa & Kitwood House, Straven House Care Home and Abbeyfield - Grove House Residential are each rated Good. Greenholme House has no published rating as yet, so the questions have to do the work there instead of the report.

What to notice on a visit

Watch whether residents are occupied or simply seated, and ask what happens when someone becomes distressed late in the day. Ask about staff turnover, since familiar faces matter more to someone with memory loss than any feature of the building. Ask whether the garden is secure and genuinely used, and what would happen if needs progressed beyond the home's registration.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Ilkley

An assessment comes before any contract and decides whether residential dementia care is the right level of support in the first place. It is free, anyone may request it, and a relative can do so with the person's consent. Bradford Metropolitan District Council is responsible for that assessment and for the financial assessment that follows it.

How the means test is applied

Savings, income and, in a permanent placement, usually the value of a property are measured against the national capital thresholds. Capital above the upper threshold means fees are met privately. Below the lower threshold only income is counted, with a weekly personal allowance protected, and a deferred payment arrangement can postpone a sale.

Costs and the allowances worth claiming

Residential dementia care is priced below nursing care because the support is personal rather than clinical, though homes with specialist dementia provision often charge above the standard local residential rate. Attendance allowance and the daily living part of personal independence payment are not means tested and are regularly overlooked. Where a council contribution falls short of a home's private fee, confirm in writing whether a third party payment is expected and who would be liable.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Ilkley

How many dementia care homes are there in Ilkley?

Ilkley has 6 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care: 1 Outstanding, 3 Good, 2 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Ilkley were inspected most recently?

Straven House Care Home (25 January 2020), Abbeydale Residential Care Home (19 October 2018) and Abbeyfield - Grove House Residential (11 May 2018) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which homes in Ilkley provide dementia care?

Five residential care homes covering Ilkley are registered to support people living with dementia: Glen Rosa & Kitwood House, Straven House Care Home, Greenholme House, Abbeyfield - Grove House Residential and Abbeydale Residential Care Home. Abbeydale Residential Care Home holds an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission, while Glen Rosa & Kitwood House, Straven House Care Home and Abbeyfield - Grove House Residential are each rated Good. Greenholme House does not have a published rating at present. Each profile links through to the inspection report behind its rating where one exists.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides residential personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, meals, prompting medication and supervision day and night. A dementia nursing home adds registered nurses on duty at all hours and can manage clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or palliative nursing. Many people live well in residential dementia care for years and only need nursing in the later stages. All 6 homes listed for Ilkley are residential rather than nursing.

What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in Ilkley?

Ask what proportion of staff hold dementia training, how often it is refreshed and how high turnover is, since familiar faces matter a great deal to someone with memory loss. Ask how the home responds to distress or agitation and whether any restrictive practice is used. Visit at a mealtime and watch how residents needing help to eat are supported. Where a home has no published rating, ask how long it has been open and who runs it.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in Ilkley?

Ask Bradford Metropolitan District Council for an adult social care needs assessment, which anyone can request, including a relative acting with the person's consent. There is no charge and the outcome does not depend on income or savings. An assessor will look at memory, daily living, mobility, medication and night time needs before recommending a level of care. A carer can also ask for a separate carer's assessment in their own right.

Can Bradford Metropolitan District Council fund a dementia placement?

Bradford Metropolitan District Council can fund or part fund a placement where the needs assessment confirms residential dementia care is appropriate and the financial assessment shows capital below the upper threshold. Anyone above that threshold meets the fees privately, although the needs assessment is still worth having on record. A deferred payment agreement may be available where most of the capital is held in a property. Where the council rate falls short of a home's fee, ask in writing who would cover the difference.

How far ahead should a family start looking?

Start early even where a move still feels distant, because dementia progresses unevenly and the decision often arrives sooner than expected. Six to eight weeks allows for repeat visits, a careful read of the reports and a settled funding position. A crisis admission or hospital discharge rarely allows that, so a shortlist held in reserve is valuable. A home with an Outstanding grade may also carry a waiting list.
