    • Care Home

White Rose House is a residential care home in Holmfirth for older people, including those living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a steady daily rhythm and knowing everybody who lives here as a person rather than a set of needs. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, at the pace of the person and not the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and when they go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to understand what is behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a problem. Families usually know a person far better than any assessment, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Meals are cooked here, we ask people what they actually want and nobody is hurried through a plate. Being in this part of Kirklees means the countryside is close by, and getting out for some air is part of normal life here. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody recovering after illness. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Holmfirth, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A great deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention when somebody would rather have something different. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. It is worth a great deal more than any written procedure. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. A planned break can be what allows a relative to keep providing care at home for longer. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would far rather hear about a problem early than find out late. Please come and see the home for yourself.

    • Care Home

Greenacres is a residential care home in Holmfirth, supporting older people from across Kirklees, including many people living with dementia. Our ambition here is unfashionably plain: we want the ordinary days to be good ones. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people look forward to. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like they belong to the person in them. Somebody awake at night. Enough going on in the house that there is a reason to come downstairs, and no pressure at all on anybody who would rather not. People keep their own habits wherever we can arrange it. A home that insists everybody rises at the same hour and bathes to a schedule has stopped being a home and become a timetable with beds in it. Dementia care is most of what we do and we have clear views about it. Correcting somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody at all. Familiar staff, a calm and unhurried house, and knowing enough of a person's life to find the thread of a conversation help enormously. Relatives are our best source of that history, and we ask for it early rather than as a form filling exercise. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather keep improving than defend a grade. Come and see us at a busy time and ask the residents what they think.

    • Care Home

We are the Hennessy Partnership homes in Holmfirth, made up of Living Well Street, Poppy Walk and Tom Wroe. Between them we provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and those living with mental ill health, as well as people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Running several houses rather than one large building suits the way we work. Each is small enough that staff know everybody properly and routines can be genuinely individual, and each feels like a household rather than a facility. Support is built around the person. Residents choose when to get up, what they eat and how to spend the day. Where sight or hearing is reduced we keep things where people expect to find them and adapt how we communicate. Where someone has a physical disability we think about equipment and access, and about not helping more than is wanted, because being over assisted is a real loss. With dementia we rely on familiar faces, a predictable day and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Where somebody is distressed we look for the cause rather than simply settling the moment. Respite stays suit family carers needing a break and people recovering after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Holmfirth

Because dementia care usually calls for more staff, the financial groundwork deserves attention before the viewing diary starts to fill. None of it depends on having savings, since anyone who appears to need care and support can be assessed free of charge, and the advice alone tends to justify the call.

Asking for a care needs assessment

The duty to assess rests with Kirklees Metropolitan Council adult social care, which works out what help is required, whether the eligibility criteria are met, and what funded support should follow. A request can come from the person concerned, from a relative, or from a professional such as a memory clinic, a general practitioner or a hospital discharge team. A financial assessment runs alongside to establish contributions. A relative providing regular unpaid care is entitled to a carer's assessment in their own name, which is easily overlooked when everything feels urgent.

What dementia care tends to cost

Fees reflect the room, the building and the level of supervision required, and dementia care is often charged at a higher rate because of the staffing it needs. Ask for a written breakdown and check what counts as an extra, since outings, chiropody and hairdressing are frequently billed separately. Where savings and capital fall below the national threshold the council may contribute towards the cost; above it the place is normally funded privately, though a deferred payment arrangement secured against a property can sometimes be agreed. Where the primary need is a health one, NHS continuing healthcare is assessed separately.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Holmfirth

Reading the inspection record

Greenacres, which appears here under two separate registrations, and the Hennessy Partnership provision at Living Well Street, Poppy Walk and Tom Wroe all hold a Good rating. White Rose House is rated Requires Improvement, which is a reason to read that report in detail rather than to rule the home out. Inspectors rate five distinct areas, so look at which were criticised and how serious the findings were, then check the date, because a home may have changed management since. Ask the manager what has altered and what evidence they can produce.

Questions that matter for dementia

Ask what dementia training the staff receive and how often it is refreshed, and put the question to the person showing you round. Find out how residents are occupied through the afternoon and early evening, when distress is often at its worst, and what happens when someone becomes agitated or wants to walk. Ask whether the layout lets residents find their own room unaided, and whether the home can continue caring for someone as the condition advances.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Holmfirth

How many dementia care homes are there in Holmfirth?

Holmfirth has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 5 CQC registered care homes in Holmfirth: 3 Good, 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Holmfirth were inspected most recently?

White Rose House (12 January 2026), The Hennessy Partnership's Living Well Street, Poppy Walk & Tom Wroe (7 August 2021) and Greenacres (13 November 2019) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can Kirklees Metropolitan Council fund a dementia care placement?

It can, where the care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and the financial assessment shows capital below the national threshold. Contributions are calculated individually, and most people pay something towards fees from income such as pensions. Above the threshold a placement is usually funded privately, although a deferred payment arrangement secured against a property is sometimes possible. Request both assessments early, because arranging them takes time.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Holmfirth?

Contact the adult social care team at Kirklees Metropolitan Council, which has a legal duty to assess anyone who appears to need care and support whatever their finances. The request can come from the person themselves, from a relative, or from a professional such as a memory clinic, general practitioner or hospital discharge coordinator. An assessor will discuss daily tasks, memory, safety at home and the support already in place, then explain which needs are eligible. Ask for the outcome and the support plan in writing, as both help when approaching homes.

How soon should we start looking at dementia care?

Start earlier than feels necessary, because dementia progresses unevenly and a suitable home may have a waiting list. Looking while the person can still take part in the decision also means their own preferences shape the outcome. Allowing a few weeks gives time to visit properly, read the inspection reports and get the council assessments moving. If a crisis or a hospital stay forces the pace, a shortlist prepared in advance makes an enormous difference.

Which homes in Holmfirth provide dementia care?

Four residential care home registrations held with the Care Quality Commission appear in this Holmfirth listing. They cover Greenacres, which appears under two separate registrations, White Rose House, and the Hennessy Partnership provision at Living Well Street, Poppy Walk and Tom Wroe. Each has its own profile on Care Assura setting out its registration and current rating. It is worth checking with a provider which registration a particular room sits under.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Holmfirth?

Ask what dementia training the staff receive, how often it is refreshed, and how long most of the team have worked there, since familiar faces reduce confusion. Find out how the day is structured, what happens in the late afternoon, and how the home responds when a resident becomes distressed or wants to leave. Where a home is rated Requires Improvement, ask what specifically was criticised and what has changed since. Request the contract and the complaints procedure in writing before you commit.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home registered for dementia provides accommodation with personal care, so staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and daily routines, with training geared to memory loss. A nursing home holds a registration requiring qualified nurses on site, which lets it manage clinical needs such as complex wounds, tube feeding or unstable conditions alongside dementia. All the providers in this Holmfirth listing are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely as the condition advances, consider nursing registered homes from the outset.
