    • Care Home

Ashworth Grange is a residential care home in Dewsbury, supporting older people from across Kirklees, including many people living with dementia. Our ambition here is unfashionably plain. We want the ordinary days to be good ones. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people look forward to. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like they belong to the person in them. Somebody awake at night. Enough going on in the house that there is a reason to come downstairs, and no pressure on anyone who would rather not. People keep their own habits wherever we can arrange it. A home that insists everybody rises at the same hour and bathes on a schedule has stopped being a home and become a timetable with beds in it. Dementia care is most of what we do and we have clear views about it. Correcting somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody. Familiar staff, a calm and unhurried house, and knowing enough of a person's life to find the thread of a conversation help enormously. Relatives are the best source of that history and we ask for it early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather keep improving than defend a grade. Come and see us at a busy time of day and ask the residents what they think.

    • Care Home

York House is a residential care home in Dewsbury. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We aim for an ordinary, comfortable household. Residents get up when they wake, eat what they actually enjoy and spend their days as they choose. Some are sociable and are downstairs from breakfast onwards. Others would rather have their own room, their own television and a quiet word with somebody who is not in a hurry. Both are perfectly reasonable and neither needs explaining. People usually arrive having struggled at home for a while, and the first few weeks are about settling rather than fitting in. We learn routines rather than imposing them, and we encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures so a room becomes theirs quickly. Dementia care here rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Where somebody is distressed, we look for the cause. Having younger adults living here as well means we are careful not to let anyone's day drift into a pattern built around much older residents. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit York House.

    • Care Home

Serene Residential Care is a care home in Dewsbury, and we support a wide range of adults: older people, younger adults, people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability or autism, people who live with mental health conditions, and people with physical disabilities or with a visual or hearing impairment. We also take respite bookings for people who need somewhere for a short stay. Supporting such a mix of people well means resisting the temptation to run the house to one rigid pattern. Somebody in their thirties with a learning disability wants a very different week from somebody in their nineties who has lived through a great deal and now wants peace, familiar faces and a comfortable chair. We take time at the start to understand what a good day looks like for each person, and we plan their care around that rather than around our convenience. Practically, we help with washing, dressing, medication, meals, mobility and continence, at whatever level each person needs, and we bring in the district nurses, GPs and specialist teams when health needs require it. We keep a close eye on wellbeing as well as health, because low mood and boredom do as much harm as anything physical. Families and friends are an important part of life here and we encourage them to visit and stay involved. If you would like to see the home in Dewsbury for yourself, you are welcome to arrange a visit at a time that suits you.

    • Care Home

Oak Park Care Home is a residential care home in Dewsbury, in the Kirklees district. The people living here include older people, many of them living with dementia, along with younger adults, people with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss and people managing mental health conditions. Respite stays are available. Because our residents need quite different things from us, support is planned with each person rather than run to a single pattern. People keep their own rooms, their own belongings and their own routines, and they decide how much of the day to spend in company and how much on their own. We ask about the small preferences in detail and expect our staff to follow them, since those details are most of what makes a place feel like home. For residents living with dementia, consistency helps more than anything. Familiar staff, routines that change only when there is a reason, and the patience to understand what somebody means when words have become unreliable. Where people have sight or hearing loss we take particular care over how we communicate, so that nobody is left out of what is going on around them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take it as evidence that the everyday work is being done properly and we keep looking at the detail. If you are considering a care home in this area for someone close to you, you are welcome to visit and ask us anything you like.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Dewsbury

Requesting a care needs assessment

The practical starting point is a written account of what the person needs, produced by a care needs assessment. It is free, carries no means test and can be requested by the person or by a relative acting on their behalf. Assessment and funded support in this area are the responsibility of Kirklees Metropolitan Council, whose assessor will consider memory, risk, mobility, medication, continence and the load currently falling on family carers. Describe the worst nights rather than the manageable days, because an assessment written from a good week understates what is really needed. A relative giving unpaid care can request a separate assessment of their own.

What the fees involve

Dementia placements are priced by the week and differ between homes in Dewsbury, so rely only on a figure a home has put in writing. Ask what the rate covers and what is billed on top, since hairdressing, chiropody, outings and certain continence products commonly sit outside it. Where the council contributes after a financial assessment, the rate it pays may be lower than a home's private fee, and that shortfall must be met by a third party top up rather than by the resident. Someone with substantial health needs may also qualify for continuing healthcare funding through the National Health Service, which is assessed by a separate process.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Dewsbury

How to weigh an Inadequate rating

Ashworth Grange, Oak Park Care Home and York House are each rated Good, while Serene Residential Care Limited has been rated Inadequate. An Inadequate judgement means inspectors found serious shortcomings, and it is not a grade to set aside because a room happens to be free. Read that report in full, note the date of the inspection, identify which of the five key questions were failed and establish whether the commission has returned since. If you are considering the home at all, ask the provider directly what it was required to do, what has changed and who is now in charge. For the homes rated Good, read the reports too, since inspectors usually describe how staff responded to someone who was distressed.

Questions that reveal the quality of dementia care

Ask how many staff on each shift have completed dementia specific training and who delivers it. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes agitated towards the end of the afternoon, and weigh whether the answer is about finding the cause or about containing the behaviour. Find out how life history is gathered and where staff actually read it. Ask how long the manager has been in post and how much agency cover the home uses in a month, because familiar faces matter enormously when memory is failing. Ask finally what happens if nursing needs develop, and whether that would mean moving again.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Dewsbury

How many dementia care homes are there in Dewsbury?

Dewsbury has 5 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 14 CQC registered care homes in Dewsbury: 4 Good, 1 Inadequate. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Dewsbury were inspected most recently?

York House (5 August 2025), Serene Residential Care Limited (25 July 2025) and Ashworth Grange (5 December 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can Kirklees Metropolitan Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It may, where the person meets the national eligibility criteria and a financial assessment shows they qualify for support. Care needs are considered first, then capital and income separately, to establish how much of the cost the council will meet. Someone with significant health needs may additionally qualify for continuing healthcare funding through the National Health Service, assessed by a different process. Where a person pays for their own care, the council can still provide advice and information.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Dewsbury?

Contact the adult social care team at Kirklees Metropolitan Council and ask for a care needs assessment, which anyone can request for themselves or on behalf of a relative. It is free and does not depend on income, savings or any previous contact. An assessor will discuss memory, safety, mobility, medication and the help a family already provides, then record the eligible needs in writing. Ask for a carer's assessment in the same conversation if a relative is giving regular unpaid support.

How early should we begin looking for a dementia care home?

Sooner than most families feel ready to, and in this area the reason is sharper than usual, because the homes rated Good are the ones most likely to have waiting lists. Starting early also allows the person moving to express a preference while they still can. If a crisis has already arrived, say so plainly when you telephone and ask how soon the home could assess. Avoid letting urgency push you towards a home whose inspection report you have not read.

Which homes in Dewsbury provide dementia care?

5 residential care homes match this search, namely Serene Residential Care Limited, Ashworth Grange, Oak Park Care Home and York House. Three of them currently hold a rating of Good and one has been rated Inadequate. Availability changes week by week, so a home listed here may have no vacancy when you make contact. Open each profile for the registration details and the most recent Care Quality Commission report, and read that report before anything else.

What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Dewsbury?

Ask how many staff on each shift hold dementia specific training and who provides that training. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes distressed late in the day, and judge whether the answer is about understanding the cause or about control. Where a home has been rated below Good, ask what the commission required, what has changed since and whether inspectors have returned. Ask as well about staff turnover and agency use, because recognition depends on seeing familiar faces.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A care home provides personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, eating, medication and daily routine, delivered by care staff. A nursing home additionally keeps qualified nurses on duty and can manage clinical needs such as complex wounds, feeding tubes, unstable conditions and much end of life care. All of the providers matching this search in Dewsbury are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If a hospital or community nursing team has indicated that nursing care is needed, look at nursing provision or ask whether district nurses can visit the home.
