    • Care Home

Staley House Care Home is a residential care home in Stalybridge, in the Tameside area. The people living here include older people, many of them living with dementia, along with people with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss, people managing mental health conditions and people living with an eating disorder. We also offer respite stays. Because our residents need quite different things from us, support is planned with each person rather than run to a single pattern. People keep their own rooms, their own belongings and their own routines, and they decide how much of the day to spend in company and how much on their own. We ask about the small preferences in detail and expect our staff to follow them, because those details are most of what makes a place feel like home. For residents living with dementia, consistency helps more than anything. Familiar staff, routines that change only when there is a reason, and the patience to understand what somebody means when the words have become unreliable. Families are closely involved, since they usually hold the history that makes sense of the present, and we keep in touch openly rather than only when there is a problem. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take it as evidence that the ordinary everyday work is being done properly and we keep looking at the detail. If you are considering a care home in Stalybridge for someone close to you, you are welcome to visit, meet our staff and residents and ask us anything you like.

    • Care Home

We are Holme Lea, a residential care home in Stalybridge. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell relatives the same things we tell the regulator. That is a wide range of needs under one roof, and it only works if we plan around individuals rather than running one routine for everyone. Somebody who wants a busy, sociable day and somebody who needs quiet and a predictable rhythm can both live well here, provided we pay proper attention to who needs what. Where access or communication need attention, they get it. If you are considering us for someone, please come and see the home and ask about the rating directly. We will answer fully rather than reassuringly.

    • Care Home

Holme Lea is a residential care home in Stalybridge, Tameside, supporting older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia and residents with physical disabilities. We will deal with the obvious point first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to dress that up. It told us that parts of how we run this home were not good enough, and we would rather you heard it from us, along with what we are doing about it, than discover it later and wonder what else we had left out. We are happy to go through the report itself with anyone considering the home and to show how we have responded. What has not changed is the daily work and the standard we hold ourselves to. We plan each resident's care with them, we are specific about what help is wanted and what is better left alone, and we keep routines and familiar faces as steady as we can for residents whose memory is affected. For residents with reduced mobility we think about comfort, equipment and how someone gets about the building rather than only about safe handling. Improvement in a care home is not an announcement, it is attention repeated over months. If you are weighing us up, come and look, speak to residents and families, and judge us on what you find.

    • Care Home

Millbrook Care Centre is a residential care home in Stalybridge, Tameside. We look after older people who need support with everyday living, along with younger adults whose needs mean that living independently is no longer realistic. Many of our residents live with dementia, and a number have physical disabilities or sight and hearing loss. We shape the house and the day around that. Calm surroundings, clear routes through the building, good lighting and staff who are not in a hurry make more difference than most things, and we use equipment and adaptations where they genuinely help rather than as a matter of course. We want this to feel like somewhere people live. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own habits, decide how they spend the day and see visitors whenever suits them. Meals are planned around what people actually enjoy, and there is company for those who want it and a quiet corner for those who do not. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, whether for a planned family break or for support while someone regains strength after illness. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour, and what they can tell us about the person is worth more than any assessment form. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and look round at a time that suits you.

    • Care Home

Oakwood is a residential care home in Stalybridge. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We support younger adults too, and we offer respite stays. The things that decide whether a care home is any good are mostly unremarkable. Whether the toast arrives warm. Whether the call bell is answered. Whether the person who helps you wash knows you well enough to talk about something other than washing. If a person communicates in a particular way, we learn it and use it consistently. This is the foundation of the rest, not an adjustment at the edges. For residents with physical disabilities we plan the practical side around what somebody can still manage themselves rather than what is quickest for us, because independence given up for convenience is rarely handed back. For those living with dementia we protect the routine and ask families for the history that makes a person make sense to us. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives are welcome unannounced.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Stalybridge

Good dementia care rests on consistency. A resident who sees the same faces, eats at flexible times, and is approached calmly when confused will have a very different experience from one moved through a rigid routine by staff who change every week. All 5 homes listed here are registered to support people living with dementia, and the differences between them lie in how reliably that consistency is delivered.

What the inspection results show

Millbrook Care Centre, Oakwood Care Centre, and Staley House Care Home each hold a Good rating, while Holme Lea has been asked to improve. A single rating out of step is a reason to read that report rather than to rule the home out, since the reasons behind a Requires Improvement judgement vary widely. Establish which of the five key questions the concern sat under, how recent the inspection was, and what the home says has changed. Then put the point to the manager and judge how candidly it is answered.

Signs of a home that understands dementia

Look for calm noise levels, clear signs and landmarks that help people find their own way, and staff who speak to residents by name and at eye level. Ask whether the home keeps a life story for each resident and how that information reaches the carer on shift overnight. Secure outdoor space, flexible mealtimes, and a team that residents recognise all count for more than recent decoration.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Stalybridge

Requesting a care needs assessment

Any adult who appears to need care and support can ask for a free assessment of their needs, and a dementia diagnosis is not required to get one. Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council carries out the assessment and arranges funded support for people found eligible. A relative providing regular unpaid care can request a separate carer's assessment of their own needs. Neither assessment costs anything, and neither commits you to accepting what is proposed.

Costs and who meets them

Where support is agreed, a financial assessment of income and capital decides what the authority pays and what the person contributes. Many families fund a placement themselves and deal directly with the home. Fees are quoted weekly and vary with the room, the level of support needed, and whether specialist dementia provision is involved, so ask each home for a written breakdown. Where a person has a primary health need, NHS continuing healthcare may cover the cost and is assessed separately.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Stalybridge

How many dementia care homes are there in Stalybridge?

Stalybridge has 5 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care: 3 Good, 2 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Stalybridge were inspected most recently?

Holme Lea (31 December 2025), Millbrook Care Centre (23 September 2023) and Holme Lea (6 May 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which care homes in Stalybridge provide dementia care?

5 residential care homes are listed on this page: Millbrook Care Centre, Oakwood Care Centre, Staley House Care Home, and Holme Lea. Each is registered with the Care Quality Commission to support people living with dementia, and each profile sets out registration details and the most recent inspection judgement. With only four to consider, visiting all of them is practical. Availability will depend on whether a suitable room is free when you make contact.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Stalybridge?

Ask what dementia training the staff have received, how often the same carers work with the same residents, and how much the team has changed in the past year. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed, and listen for an answer built on reassurance rather than restriction. Where a home has been asked to improve, ask what the inspector found and what evidence exists that it has been resolved. Watch the communal rooms on an ordinary afternoon and trust what you see.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides personal care, supervision, and support with daily living from trained care staff. A dementia nursing home provides all of that and keeps registered nurses on duty, so it can meet clinical needs such as complex medication, wound care, or swallowing difficulties. All 5 providers on this page are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely to be needed, raise it at the first enquiry so the home can answer plainly.

Can Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where a care needs assessment finds the person eligible for support and a financial assessment shows they qualify for help with the fees. Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council is responsible for both stages, and the contribution depends on income and capital. Some people have the full cost met, others a proportion, and others are assessed as funding the placement themselves. Where the dominant need is a health need, NHS continuing healthcare may apply instead.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Stalybridge?

Get in touch with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council adult social care and ask for an assessment of needs, which you can request for a relative with their consent. It is free and commits you to nothing. The assessor will consider how the person manages day to day, what family already provides, and where support would make the most difference. Note the reference number you are given, as it saves going over the same ground later.

How far in advance should I start looking for dementia care in Stalybridge?

Start as soon as the question arises, even if a move still feels some way off. Two or three months of lead time lets you visit, read the inspection reports, and get an assessment moving without deciding under pressure. Where circumstances have changed suddenly, contact all four homes and be clear about what is needed and when. Having an assessment already completed almost always makes the arrangements come together faster.
