    • Care Home

We at Charnley House are proud to offer warm, person centred residential care in the heart of Hyde, providing a welcoming home for older people who need daily support, dementia care, or a short respite stay. Nestled within the familiar surroundings of Tameside in the North West, our home has become a trusted part of the local community, offering families peace of mind close to where their loved ones have always called home. Our setting reflects the character of Hyde itself, a town known for its friendly spirit and strong sense of community. Residents benefit from comfortable communal spaces designed to feel domestic rather than clinical, where quiet corners for reading sit alongside sociable lounges for shared activities and visits from family. Being located within the SK postcode area means loved ones from across Tameside and the wider Greater Manchester region can visit easily, keeping those important family bonds strong. At the heart of what we do is a genuine commitment to older person care. Every resident who joins us is welcomed as an individual, with their life story, preferences, and routines shaping the support we provide. For those living with dementia, our approach is patient and understanding, focusing on familiarity, gentle reassurance, and meaningful moments throughout the day. We know that a dementia diagnosis can feel overwhelming for the whole family, and we work closely with relatives so that everyone feels informed, listened to, and involved in decisions about care. Our residential care is designed for older adults who may find daily tasks increasingly difficult at home but who still wish to enjoy company, comfort, and independence in equal measure. From help with personal care to support at mealtimes and encouragement to take part in social activities, our team is here to make each day easier and more enjoyable. Nutritious meals, sociable dining, and thoughtful daily routines all play their part in helping residents feel settled and cared for. We also offer respite care, which can be a real lifeline for family carers who need a short break, or for older people recovering after a hospital stay. A respite visit at Charnley House gives loved ones the chance to rest whilst knowing their family member is safe, well looked after, and enjoying a change of scene. Many respite guests tell us they enjoy the company and routine so much that they return again in future. Families researching care homes will rightly want to understand our most recent CQC inspection, carried out on 31 March 2025. Our overall rating was Requires Improvement, and we want to be open and transparent about what that means. Inspectors judged us to be Good in three key areas, Effective, Caring, and Responsive, which reflects the compassion of our team, the quality of the day to day support we provide, and how well we respond to each resident as an individual. The areas identified for further work were Safe and Well led, and we are taking this feedback seriously. A clear improvement plan is in place, and we are committed to strengthening these areas whilst continuing to build on the genuine warmth and personalised care that our residents and their families already value. We believe honesty matters when families are making one of the most important decisions of their lives. Choosing a care home is deeply personal, and we would rather share the full picture than only the highlights. What we can promise is a team that truly cares, a home where kindness is the standard, and a management approach focused on listening, learning, and continually improving. If you are exploring residential care, dementia support, or respite options in Hyde or the wider Tameside area, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Charnley House. Come and visit us, meet our team, spend time in our communal areas, and see for yourself the atmosphere we have created. We understand how much thought goes into this decision, and we are here to answer your questions honestly, share more about our improvement journey, and help you feel confident about the next steps for your loved one.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Hyde, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We would rather tell you that ourselves than leave you to find it later. We are working through the points the inspectors raised, and if you are considering the home for someone close to you we will go through the report with you and answer whatever you want to ask. Please come and see the place as it really is. Talking to the people who live here will tell you more than we can.

    • Care Home

Balmoral Care Home in Hyde provides residential care for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia. People come to us at very different points. Some have managed at home for years with increasing difficulty, others arrive suddenly after a fall or a hospital admission. Either way, the first weeks matter, and we spend them learning about the person, their family, their working life and their habits, because that is what allows us to offer care that fits rather than care in general. Staff help with washing and dressing, with moving about safely, with medication and with eating and drinking well. For people living with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings familiar, adjust how we communicate rather than expecting the person to adjust to us, and treat distress as something to be understood rather than managed. The home is a place people live in. Rooms are personalised, meals are cooked here, there is company and activity for those who want it, and visitors are welcome without fuss. Respite stays are available, which suits families needing a break and people who would like to try the home before making a permanent decision. If you would like to look round, please ring us and we will arrange a visit.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Hyde

What These Homes Are Registered to Provide

All six providers listed are residential care homes registered to support people living with dementia. In practice that means accommodation, meals and personal care from staff who are expected to understand how memory loss, disorientation and changes in mood shape an ordinary day. It does not include nursing care, which requires a separate registration and qualified nurses on site. That distinction matters where a diagnosis sits alongside a physical condition needing regular clinical attention.

An Evenly Split Record

Three of the homes hold a Good rating and three are rated Requires Improvement. A split like that makes the reports essential rather than optional, because they set out exactly what inspectors found and when. Each report separates safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness and leadership, so a home marked down in one area may be sound in the others. Check the inspection date too, since a home may have changed manager or owner since the last visit.

Signs of Good Dementia Support

Much of what matters is visible within ten minutes of arriving. Look at whether residents seem occupied rather than parked in front of a television, whether staff speak to people at eye level, and whether the building helps someone find a bathroom without having to ask. Secure outdoor space that can be used freely is a good sign, as are lounges quiet enough to hold a conversation in. Ask what dementia training staff receive, how often agency workers are used and whether the same faces appear on the same shifts.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Hyde

Requesting a Care Needs Assessment

A care needs assessment records formally what help a person needs and whether those needs meet the national eligibility threshold. It is free to anyone who appears to require support, whatever their savings, and families can approach Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council to arrange it. A relative providing care can request a separate assessment of their own needs. Keep the written outcome, since every home you contact will want much the same information.

Fees, Contributions and Timing

Dementia care is charged as a weekly fee covering the room, meals and personal care, with the figure often reflecting how much supervision someone needs. Where eligible needs are identified and a financial assessment shows capital below the relevant threshold, the council may contribute, with an assessed amount paid from income. Where needs stem mainly from health rather than social care, continuing healthcare funding is assessed separately by the health service. Because assessments and waiting lists both take time, starting early keeps more options open than waiting until a move becomes urgent.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Hyde

How many dementia care homes are there in Hyde?

Hyde has 6 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 8 CQC registered care homes in Hyde: 3 Good, 3 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Hyde were inspected most recently?

Polebank Hall Residential Care Home (18 September 2026), Balmoral Care Home (4 November 2025) and Charnley House (31 March 2025) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which providers offer dementia care in Hyde?

Six providers appear on this page, each registered with the Care Quality Commission as a residential care home supporting people with dementia. Three are rated Good and three are rated Requires Improvement. Vacancies change from week to week, so it is sensible to contact more than one at a time. Every profile below sets out registration details and links through to the published inspection report.

What should families ask when visiting a dementia care home in Hyde?

Ask what dementia training staff receive, how many are on duty overnight and how often agency cover is used. Find out how the day is structured, what happens when a resident becomes distressed or wants to walk about, and what the home tries before turning to medication. Ask to see a sample care plan and to hear how staff learn about someone's life before the diagnosis. It is also fair to ask what would happen if needs increased beyond what the home is registered to provide.

How does a dementia care home differ from a dementia nursing home?

A residential care home provides accommodation, meals and personal care, including help with washing, dressing and medication, delivered by care staff. A nursing home holds a registration allowing qualified nurses to be on site at all hours alongside that support. All six providers listed here are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Where dementia is accompanied by a clinical need such as complex wound care or unstable physical health, a nursing registration is normally required.

Can Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council fund a placement?

It can, where a care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and a financial assessment shows capital below the relevant threshold. The council then contributes towards the weekly fee while the person pays an assessed contribution from income. If needs are primarily clinical, continuing healthcare funding may be assessed by the health service instead. Both processes take time, which is why the request should be made well before a move becomes urgent.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in Hyde?

Contact Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, the authority responsible for adult social care here, and ask for a care needs assessment. It is free and available to anyone who appears to need support, whatever their income or savings. A practitioner will look at daily living, memory, safety, mobility and the help relatives already provide. Keep the written outcome, as any home you approach will want the same information.

How early should the search for dementia care begin?

Starting several months ahead is ideal, because it leaves time to visit homes more than once rather than deciding in the days after a crisis. Waiting lists at well regarded homes often run to weeks, particularly for rooms suited to higher levels of need. Where council funding may be involved, allow further time for the assessments that come first. Reading the profiles below early makes the eventual choice considerably calmer.
