    • Care Home

We at Simonsfield Care Home are proud to offer a welcoming residential care home in the heart of Runcorn, where compassionate support meets a genuine sense of community. Nestled within the Halton area of the North West, our home provides residential care, dementia care, and respite support for older people and younger adults alike, all delivered with warmth and respect. Our setting in Runcorn offers residents the reassurance of familiar surroundings within a peaceful and comfortable environment. The home has been thoughtfully designed to feel welcoming from the moment you step through the door, with communal spaces that encourage friendship and quieter areas where residents can enjoy peaceful moments alone or with visiting loved ones. Being part of the wider WA postcode community means families and friends can visit easily, whilst residents continue to feel connected to the town they know and love. Our specialisms reflect the diverse needs of the people who call Simonsfield home. For older people seeking long term residential care, we provide a nurturing environment where daily routines, personal preferences, and individual histories are honoured. For those living with dementia, our approach centres on understanding each person as an individual, offering gentle, patient support that helps residents feel safe, valued, and understood. We also welcome younger adults whose care needs require a supportive residential setting, and we understand that everyone deserves to be treated according to their own age, interests, and aspirations rather than a one size approach. Respite care is another important part of what we offer. We recognise that family carers give so much of themselves, and sometimes a short stay with us can provide much needed rest whilst offering their loved one a change of scene, new company, and reliable support. Whether it is planned in advance or needed at short notice, we aim to make respite stays reassuring for everyone involved. In practice, our commitment to these specialisms means that every resident benefits from care that is tailored to who they are. We take time to learn about each person's life story, their likes and dislikes, their family relationships, and the small things that bring comfort and joy. This person centred approach shapes everything from mealtimes to activities, and helps families feel confident that their relative is truly known and cared for. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection, carried out in June 2019, rated Simonsfield Care Home as Good overall. We were pleased to receive a Good rating across all five domains assessed by the CQC, meaning our home was judged to be safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well led. For families, this consistent rating offers reassurance that the fundamentals of good care are in place: residents are protected from harm, supported to live well, treated with kindness, listened to when needs change, and cared for within a home that is thoughtfully managed. We continue to build on this foundation every single day, striving always to improve and to provide the very best experience for those we support. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the mix of emotions that comes with it. If you are considering residential care, dementia support, or respite in the Runcorn area for someone you love, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Simonsfield Care Home. Come and visit, meet our team, and see for yourself the atmosphere we have created. We would be honoured to answer your questions, listen to your story, and explore how we might support your family during this next chapter.

    • Care Home

Croftwood is a residential care home in Runcorn providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need help with everyday life, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. The place runs at the pace of the people living in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley arrives, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the many small practical things that become difficult alone, given in a way that leaves somebody their privacy and their dignity. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar. Our staff tend to stay with us, and that continuity does more to settle a person than any particular approach could. We also take trouble over the building so that it is easy to understand and move around. Families are welcome whenever they want to come. Respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and you are welcome to visit.

    • Care Home

Norton Lodge is a residential care home in Runcorn. We support older people and younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose regular carer needs a rest. The people who live here need different things from us. Many need help with personal care, moving about safely, medication and meals. A number are living with dementia, and for them we keep the day recognisable, keep the same staff around and work at their pace rather than ours. We also support people living with mental ill health, working alongside community mental health colleagues, and people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much independence somebody actually has. We want to be straightforward with you. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather tell you that here than let you find it elsewhere. We understand what the inspectors raised with us, we are working through it, and we are willing to discuss any part of it with anybody considering a place here or already living with us. What we are working towards is a house that feels like a home: food cooked on the premises, somewhere quiet as well as somewhere sociable, and visitors welcome without appointment. Please come and see us and ask us anything.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Runcorn

The paperwork sets the pace

A placement moves at the speed of the paperwork, and the first piece of it costs nothing. An assessment of need is open to anyone who may require care, whatever their savings, and it records how someone manages washing, dressing, medication, eating, orientation and risk at home. Ask Halton Borough Council Adult Social Care to carry it out and to arrange the financial assessment that follows, which decides whether funded support applies. Where there is a diagnosis, ask for it and the current medication list to be included, since homes rely on that detail when judging whether they can meet the need.

What a placement costs

Fees are quoted weekly and cover the room, meals, laundry and personal care, with hairdressing, chiropody and outings charged separately. A place in a unit designed around dementia sometimes carries a higher fee, so ask what the difference buys in staffing levels and training. Where capital falls below the national threshold, the council may contribute once its financial assessment is complete, and above it the place is funded privately. Ask what happens if nursing care becomes necessary later, because not every home can support someone through that change.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Runcorn

Two Good records and one asking for improvement

Croftwood and Simonsfield Care Home both hold a Good rating, so read their reports for what inspectors said about staffing, about support for people who become distressed and about activities for those who cannot follow a group. Norton Lodge is rated Requires Improvement, and that report names the specific shortfalls, which the provider may already have addressed. Ask the manager what has changed and what evidence supports it. Check the date of each inspection too, since a judgement can be a few years old and staff teams change.

What to look for on the visit

Ask what dementia training the staff have completed and how often it is refreshed, how many carers are on duty overnight and how settled the team is, because familiar faces count for a great deal. Watch how a repeated question is answered and whether residents are helped to move about rather than left seated for long stretches. Ask how the home handles disturbed nights, refusal of food and walking with purpose, and whether the garden can be used safely. Visit twice if you can, once by arrangement and once unannounced near a mealtime.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Runcorn

How many dementia care homes are there in Runcorn?

Runcorn has 3 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 7 CQC registered care homes in Runcorn: 2 Good, 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Runcorn were inspected most recently?

Norton Lodge (26 August 2025), Simonsfield Care Home (13 June 2019) and Croftwood (27 March 2019) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can Halton Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can contribute where the needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows capital below the national threshold. The council pays up to the rate it will meet and the resident contributes from income such as pensions. Above the threshold, the placement is funded privately until savings fall to that level. Where a property is involved, ask about a deferred payment arrangement.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Runcorn?

Contact Halton Borough Council and ask for an adult social care needs assessment for the person living with dementia. An assessor will go through memory, medication, mobility, daily routines and safety at home, on a visit or by telephone. The assessment is free and does not depend on income or savings. The written outcome is what homes will want to read before offering a place.

How early should we start looking?

Dementia progresses unevenly, so looking before a move becomes urgent is sensible. Where it can be planned, two or three months allows for the assessment, repeat visits and a funding decision. Rooms suited to dementia care are limited and may not be free in the week you need one. If the move follows a hospital stay, tell the ward and the discharge team early what you are looking for.

Which providers in Runcorn offer dementia care?

Three registered care homes match this search: Croftwood, Simonsfield Care Home and Norton Lodge. All three are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Two hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and one is rated Requires Improvement. Each profile gives the provider details and the current rating.

What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Runcorn?

Ask what dementia training staff have completed and how many carers are on duty overnight. Ask how the home supports someone who becomes distressed, how disturbed nights are handled and what happens when food is refused. Where a home has been told to improve, ask what has changed since the inspection and what evidence supports it. Finish by asking what the weekly fee includes and what is charged separately.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

Both look after people living with dementia, but the registrations differ. A care home provides help with daily living from trained care staff, while a nursing home also has a qualified nurse on site at all times for wounds, feeding tubes, injections and unstable conditions. The three homes listed here are registered for residential care. If nursing needs are expected, mention that during the assessment so the right registration is considered.
