    • Care Home

Halton View Care Home is a residential home in Widnes, caring for older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia. What we provide is help with the ordinary business of the day: assistance to wash and dress, medication managed properly and on time, meals cooked on the premises, support to get about safely and staff available through the night. For residents living with dementia we keep the rhythm of the day predictable and the staff around them consistent, and we lean on what families can tell us about a person's history. We should be straightforward with you about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have been working through the points raised, particularly around record keeping, staff supervision and the consistency of care planning, and we would encourage anyone considering the home to ask us about that directly rather than take our word for it. Relatives are involved in that work, since they are best placed to judge whether things have actually improved. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Families across Halton are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

Oakmeadow Community Support Centre in Widnes is a care home supporting adults with a wide range of needs, including older people, people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also support younger adults and offer respite stays. We will start with our last inspection rather than leave you to find it. The Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We accepted the findings and worked through them with the team. The effort has gone into the things that affect people directly, which are safe medication practice, keeping staffing consistent so people are supported by workers who know them, and making sure a concern raised by a resident, a relative or an advocate reaches a manager and gets a proper answer. What we are working towards is unchanged. Everyone here has a plan agreed with them, covering how they like to be supported and what they want their days to hold. People choose when to get up, what to eat and how much company they want. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do communicate and make sure the team knows. When someone becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than the quickest way to stop it. Please come and visit, ask us about the inspection and see the place as it is now.

    • Care Home

We are Widnes Hall, a residential care home in Widnes. We look after older people, including those living with dementia, and we take respite bookings for shorter stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell relatives the same things we tell the regulator. What we are working to protect while we do that is ordinary life here. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you wake, where you take your breakfast, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly: those remain your decisions. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail, knowing somebody's history and the work they did, recognising early what tends to unsettle them, and going at their pace rather than the rota's. If you are considering Widnes Hall for someone, please come and see us and ask about the rating directly. We would rather answer that fully than have it hanging over the conversation.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Widnes

Dementia registration is a starting point rather than a guarantee, and the practice behind it varies considerably. What counts is whether staff are trained to respond to confusion and distress rather than contain it, whether the building helps people find their way, and whether a resident who walks frequently has somewhere safe to do so. Ask how many staff hold dementia training and how often it is refreshed.

Where the grades sit

Madeline McKenna Court and Trewan House Care Home are each rated Good. Widnes Hall, Oakmeadow Community Support Centre and Halton View Care Home currently hold ratings of Requires Improvement. A lower grade is not an instruction to look elsewhere, but with three of the five in that position the reports need reading before anything is decided.

Questions these reports make necessary

Where a home sits below Good, ask which of the five assessed areas fell short, what has changed since and whether there is an action plan to see. Ask about staff turnover, since unstable staffing often sits behind weaker findings and matters doubly to someone with memory loss. Ask the council too whether homes beyond the immediate area could be considered.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Widnes

The assessment comes before any contract and decides whether residential dementia care is the right level of support at all. It is free, anyone may request it, and a relative can do so with the person's consent. Halton Borough Council is responsible for that assessment and for the financial assessment that follows it, and a carer living with the person is entitled to one of their own.

How the financial assessment works

Savings, income and, in a permanent placement, usually the value of a property are measured against the national capital thresholds. Capital above the upper threshold means fees are met privately. Below the lower threshold only income is counted, with a weekly personal allowance protected, and a deferred payment arrangement can delay the sale of a house.

Costs and the allowances worth claiming

Residential dementia care is priced below nursing care because the support is personal rather than clinical. Attendance allowance and the daily living part of personal independence payment are not means tested and are frequently overlooked by people funding themselves. Where a council contribution falls short of a home's private rate, establish in writing whether a third party payment is expected and who would be liable for it.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Widnes

How many dementia care homes are there in Widnes?

Widnes has 5 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 10 CQC registered care homes in Widnes: 2 Good, 3 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Widnes were inspected most recently?

Trewan House Care Home (16 February 2026), Halton View Care Home (14 May 2025) and Widnes Hall (18 March 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which homes in Widnes provide dementia care?

Five residential care homes covering Widnes are registered to support people living with dementia: Madeline McKenna Court, Trewan House Care Home, Widnes Hall, Oakmeadow Community Support Centre and Halton View Care Home. Madeline McKenna Court and Trewan House Care Home are rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. Widnes Hall, Oakmeadow Community Support Centre and Halton View Care Home currently hold ratings of Requires Improvement. Each profile links through to the inspection report behind its grade.

What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in Widnes?

Ask what proportion of staff hold dementia training, how often it is refreshed and how high turnover is, since familiar faces matter a great deal to someone with memory loss. Ask how the home responds to distress or agitation and whether any restrictive practice is used. Where a home holds Requires Improvement, ask what has changed since the inspection and ask to see the action plan. Visit at a mealtime and watch how residents needing help to eat are supported.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides residential personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, meals, prompting medication and supervision day and night. A dementia nursing home adds registered nurses on duty at all hours and can manage clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or palliative nursing. Many people live well in residential dementia care for years and only need nursing in the later stages. All five homes listed for Widnes are residential rather than nursing.

Can Halton Borough Council fund a dementia care placement?

Halton Borough Council can fund or part fund a placement where the needs assessment confirms residential dementia care is appropriate and the financial assessment shows capital below the upper threshold. Anyone above that threshold meets the fees privately, although the needs assessment is still worth having on record. A deferred payment agreement may be available where most of the capital is held in a property. Where the council rate falls short of a home's fee, ask in writing who would cover the difference.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in Widnes?

Ask Halton Borough Council for an adult social care needs assessment, which anyone can request, including a relative acting with the person's consent. There is no charge and the outcome does not depend on income or savings. An assessor will look at memory, daily living, mobility, medication and night time needs before recommending a level of care. The assessment can also cover whether homes beyond the immediate area should be looked at.

How far ahead should a family start looking?

Start early even where a move still feels distant, because dementia progresses unevenly and the decision often arrives sooner than expected. Allow longer than usual here, since most of this list needs its reports read carefully before a visit is worthwhile. A crisis admission or hospital discharge rarely allows that kind of preparation. It is also worth asking the council early about options a little further afield.
