About Twyford House
Twyford House is a residential care home in Dover, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Most of those living here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. We treat this as somebody's home rather than a placement. People arrange their own rooms, have a real say in the food and the shopping, and are involved in how the household runs. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a club, we treat that as the purpose of our support rather than an extra added on. Predictability matters a great deal here. For many of those living with us, knowing what is happening and who will be on shift is what makes a day workable rather than difficult, so we plan ahead and explain changes early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather write that plainly than have a family come across it and wonder what else we left unsaid. We accept what was found and we are working through it, and we are not going to claim it is all behind us in a paragraph. If you are considering this home for someone, please visit without an appointment, spend time with the people who live here, talk to relatives, and ask us hard questions about what has changed.

What the inspectors found
A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Twyford House. Report published 22 July 2022.
- 30 May 2022
- 14 places, 11 people were using the service at the time
Safe
Inspectors found there were times when there were not enough staff to give the support people were assessed as needing. At those times, people did not receive this support. Staff had training on how to recognise and report abuse, and recruitment processes had been followed.
Effective
This was a focused inspection, so inspectors did not inspect this key question. The Good rating comes from an earlier full inspection. Inspectors said no areas of concern were identified.
Caring
This was a focused inspection, so inspectors did not inspect this key question. The Good rating comes from an earlier full inspection. Inspectors said no areas of concern were identified.
Responsive
This was a focused inspection, so inspectors did not inspect this key question. The Good rating comes from an earlier full inspection. Inspectors said no areas of concern were identified.
Well-led
Inspectors found that governance processes had not always made sure staff had up to date information. People's views about the service were not sought, and people did not always have a voice in their own care. Staff turnover had been high, and inspectors said some staff practice could be improved, for example how some staff spoke to people.
