About St Matthews - The Avenue
St Matthews at The Avenue in Northampton is a nursing home caring for older people who need qualified nursing as well as help with everyday life, for adults with mental health needs and for younger adults whose needs are best met in a home like ours. Nurses are on duty at all hours, which means health problems are picked up early and dealt with here wherever possible. Many of our residents are living with dementia. We keep the day steady and familiar, keep the same staff working with the same people and take the time to understand what somebody means when words have become difficult. Rushing a person with dementia never saves time, so we plan on the basis that things take as long as they take. For residents with mental health needs, a calm household and staff who know a person well enough to notice a change do more good than anything else. We work closely with local services and doctors and review medication properly. Nursing is the foundation, not the purpose. Residents still choose when to get up, what they eat, where they sit and who comes to see them. Respite stays are available for people needing nursing care for a short while and for family carers who need a break. Please contact us if you would like to visit, meet the nurses and ask us the difficult questions.
