About InFocus Charity
We are a nursing home in Exeter supporting people with sensory impairment alongside other needs. Those living here include adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, mostly younger adults. Respite stays are part of what we do. Sight and hearing loss change everything about how support has to be delivered, and getting that right is the first task rather than an adjustment at the edges. How we announce ourselves, how we describe a room, how we let somebody know we are leaving: all of it is agreed individually and used consistently by everybody. Done badly it makes a person's world much smaller than it needs to be. Having nursing knowledge here matters particularly for people with learning disabilities, whose physical health problems are too often put down to their disability rather than investigated. Beyond that, this is somebody's home. People choose their own surroundings, share in decisions, and where they want work or a course we treat that as the purpose of the support. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are pleased with it and conscious it describes a period rather than a promise, so we keep asking people here what to change.
