About Mencap - West Domiciliary Care Agency

We are the Mencap home care and support team for west Suffolk, based in Bury St Edmunds. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, older people and younger adults in their own homes and communities. We take the word support seriously and try hard not to let it slide into doing things for people. The first conversation is about somebody's life rather than their difficulties: what a good week looks like, what stands in the way of it, and what they would much rather manage themselves. The rota comes after that, never before. In practice that means quite different work for different people. Personal care, medication, meals and household help for some. For others, somebody alongside them at college, at work, on the bus, at an appointment or through the early weeks of living independently for the first time. We put proper resource behind both rather than treating one as the real job. Consistency is what we work hardest at, especially for autistic people and for anybody whose day depends on knowing what is coming. The same small team stays around a person, changes get proper notice, and we stick to what we agreed even when it is inconvenient for us. Where somebody finds it hard to speak for themselves, we take particular care to understand what they are telling us in other ways. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection.
