The people we visit include older people, many of them living with dementia, as well as younger adults, people with a learning disability or autism, people with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss, people managing mental health conditions and people working through difficulties with alcohol or drugs. With a range that wide we do not pretend one approach suits everybody. We spend real time at the start understanding how somebody lives, what they want help with and what they would rather keep doing themselves, and we then think carefully about which carer suits which person. Once a good match is working we protect it, keeping the same small team going to the same person. Visits can cover personal care and medication, cooking, shopping and housework, support to get out into the community, or company for somebody who sees very few people in a week. Some people need one short call a day and others need several, or support overnight. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. That judgement came largely from what the people we visit and their families told the inspectors, which is the opinion that counts. We do not treat it as finished business, because standards slip quietly wherever nobody keeps looking, and we still ask every family whether we are getting it right.
