What is the difference between a home care agency and a nursing service?

Arranging and paying for home care in the North East

The care needs assessment

You can request an assessment from the local authority Adult Social Care team, either for yourself or, with consent, for a relative. They will also consider the wellbeing of anyone providing unpaid care. The outcome is a written support plan setting out eligible needs and the hours of care recommended to meet them.

How funding usually works

After the needs assessment, a separate financial assessment looks at savings, income and certain benefits. If capital sits below the upper threshold set nationally, the local authority may contribute to the cost of care, either by commissioning an agency directly or through a direct payment that lets the person choose their own provider. Those with capital above the threshold are self funders and arrange the package themselves, though the local authority must still offer information and advice.
