- Care Home
Hulton Care Home is a residential care home in Nelson, Lancashire. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and to younger adults who need residential support, and we take respite bookings for short stays. We are a home of a size where everyone knows everyone. That sounds like a small thing and it is not. It means our team notices when someone eats less than usual, sleeps badly or goes quiet, and can act on it the same day rather than a fortnight later at a review meeting. People decide how their own day goes. When to get up, what to wear, whether to sit in the lounge or stay in their room, what they want on their plate. Rooms are furnished with people's own things because a familiar chair and familiar pictures do more for someone settling in than anything we could buy. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings calm and consistent, use what we know of the person's life to make sense of what they are telling us, and avoid the sort of well meaning correction that only causes distress. Health needs are looked after with local GPs and community nurses, and families hear from us as a matter of routine rather than only when something goes wrong. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Do come and visit us in Nelson before you make any decision.

- Care Home
Marsden Grange is a care home in Nelson, Lancashire. We provide residential care for older people, and we support people living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Where sight or hearing has failed, a care home can very easily become a confusing and lonely place. So we make a point of the small habits that prevent that: saying who has come into the room, describing what is about to happen rather than assuming it is obvious, keeping belongings exactly where the person expects them, and making sure conversation does not stop simply because it has become harder work. The same practical attitude runs through the rest of what we do. People here decide when to get up, how to spend the day and how much company they want. Rooms belong to the people in them, and visitors come when it suits them. For those living with dementia, familiarity carries most of the weight. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round if you are considering care locally, and talk to the people who live here.

- Care Home
Here at Brierfield House, we are a care home based in Nelson, Lancashire, and we are proud to be part of this community. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and those with physical disabilities, and we work hard every day to make sure the people who live with us feel genuinely at home. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the biggest decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone first gets in touch with us, we try to make the process as straightforward and reassuring as possible. We take time to get to know each person properly, because good care really does start with understanding who someone is, what matters to them, and how they like to live their life. Our team is experienced across all of our specialisms, and there is a real sense of continuity here. The staff who support our residents day to day build genuine relationships with them, and that consistency makes a real difference, particularly for those living with dementia who benefit greatly from familiar faces and familiar routines. We have received a rating of good from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the standard of care we work to maintain. We are always looking at how we can improve and we welcome feedback from residents and their families as part of that. Life at Brierfield House is about more than meeting care needs. We want people to enjoy their days, to feel comfortable and respected, and to have a say in how things are done. Whether someone needs a little support or more substantial care, we are here to help them live as well as possible. If you would like to find out more, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

- Care Home
Marsden Heights is a care home in Nelson caring for older people and younger adults with a broad range of needs, including dementia, mental ill health, physical disabilities, sight and hearing loss, and eating disorders. Our staff are used to supporting people whose needs do not fit neatly into one category. We build the day around the individual rather than the building. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given at the time and in the way somebody prefers, and we take the trouble to learn those preferences before a person moves in so nobody has to keep explaining themselves. Where dementia is part of the picture we keep routines steady and faces familiar, and we use what we know about a person's working life and family to steady things when they are anxious. Where mental ill health or difficulties around eating are involved, we keep close contact with health teams, avoid making mealtimes a battleground, and involve the person properly in decisions about their own care. Meals are cooked here and adapted where they need to be. Visitors are welcome and we would much rather families raised a worry early than sat on it. Short respite stays are available, often after a spell in hospital or to give a carer a rest. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we would be glad to show you round.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Nelson
A dementia diagnosis rarely arrives with a tidy plan attached, and the practical steps usually begin with an assessment rather than a shortlist. A care needs assessment is free, can be requested by anyone and establishes whether residential dementia care is the right level of support. Lancashire County Council is responsible for that assessment and for the financial assessment that decides what the family contributes, and a relative can set both in motion with the person's consent.
What the financial assessment takes into account
Savings, income and, in most permanent placements, the value of a property are measured against the national capital thresholds. Capital above the upper threshold means fees are met privately, while below the lower threshold only income counts, with a weekly allowance protected for personal spending. A deferred payment arrangement can sometimes delay the sale of a home.
Cost and the help that sits outside the means test
Residential dementia care is priced below nursing care, since support here is personal rather than clinical, and fees vary between the homes covering Nelson. Attendance allowance and the daily living part of personal independence payment are not means tested, and nobody paying their own fees should overlook them. Where a person lives alone and needs constant supervision, a council funded placement may still work out cheaper than hourly support at home. Ask what the weekly figure includes and what is charged on top.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Nelson
Brierfield House, Marsden Grange, Hulton Care Home and Marsden Heights Care Home all hold a Good rating, so the choice turns on fit rather than on grades. Dementia specific practice is where homes diverge most, and it is worth asking how many staff have completed dementia training and whether that training is refreshed.
Looking past a shared rating
A Good rating covers whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and two homes can reach it by quite different routes. Read the caring and responsive sections closely, since those speak most directly to how a resident with dementia is treated day to day. Check the inspection date as well, because a report some years old describes a staff team that may since have changed.
What to notice on a visit
Watch whether residents are occupied or simply seated, and ask what happens when someone becomes distressed in the evening. Ask how the home supports a resident who walks frequently, and whether the garden is secure and genuinely used. Ask too what happens if needs progress beyond what the home is registered to provide.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Nelson
How many dementia care homes are there in Nelson?
Nelson has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 9 CQC registered care homes in Nelson: 4 Good. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Nelson were inspected most recently?
Brierfield House (9 June 2021), Marsden Heights Care Home (12 October 2018) and Marsden Grange (10 October 2018) have the most recent CQC reports.
How is a care needs assessment arranged for someone in Nelson?
Ask Lancashire County Council for an adult social care needs assessment, which anyone can request, including a relative acting with the person's consent. There is no charge and the outcome does not depend on how much money the person has. An assessor will look at memory, daily living, mobility, medication and night time needs before recommending a level of care. If the person is in hospital, the discharge team normally starts the process, though families are entitled to chase it directly.
Can Lancashire County Council fund a dementia care home placement?
Lancashire County Council can fund or contribute towards a placement where the needs assessment confirms residential dementia care is appropriate and the financial assessment shows capital below the upper threshold. Anyone above that threshold is expected to meet the fees privately, although the needs assessment is still worth having. A deferred payment agreement may be available where most of the capital is tied up in a property. Where a council rate falls short of a home's fee, ask in writing who would be liable for the difference.
Which homes in Nelson provide dementia care?
Four residential care homes covering Nelson are registered to support people living with dementia: Brierfield House, Marsden Grange, Hulton Care Home and Marsden Heights Care Home. All four are rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. None of them currently sits below that grade, so every option here has been inspected. Each profile links to the inspection report that sits behind the rating.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides residential personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, meals, prompting medication and supervision through the day and night. A dementia nursing home adds registered nurses on duty at all hours, which allows it to manage clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or palliative nursing. Many people live well in residential dementia care for years and only need nursing care in the later stages. All four homes listed for Nelson are residential rather than nursing.
How far ahead should a family start looking?
Looking early is worth doing even when a move still feels some way off, because dementia progresses unevenly and the decision often arrives sooner than expected. Six to eight weeks gives time for repeat visits, a careful read of the reports and a resolved funding position. A crisis admission or hospital discharge rarely allows that, so a shortlist held in reserve is valuable. Where a suitable room comes free early, many homes will hold it for a short while against a deposit.
What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in Nelson?
Ask what proportion of staff hold dementia training and how often it is refreshed, and ask about turnover, since familiar faces matter a great deal to someone with memory loss. Ask how the home responds to distress or agitation and whether any restrictive practice is used. Visit at a mealtime and watch how residents who need help to eat are supported. Ask finally what would happen if needs progressed beyond the home's registration.
